I have a daughter who struggles with her weight. It's been a sore subject in our home for a while now, and the cause of many tears (mine and hers). I was hoping Jill Zimmerman Rutledge would be able to impart some wisdom and shed a little light on our dilemma.Rutledge does just that, addressing weight, fashion, and perfectionism. Written for a teen audience, each chapter shares the stories of three girls and how they're coping with that particular issue. Each girl created a special statement for themselves (such as my personal favorite, "Everyone gets a prize", which means every one has one truly great thing about her no matter what she may think), and developed a plan of action to get to her goal. Rutledge is careful not to push dieting, but a healthy lifestyle filled with good foods and exercise. She tackles different body types and unrealistic expectations. I was impressed with the straight-forward, practical approach that is both honest and encouraging.

Jill Zimmerman Rutledge is as skillful with the world of teen girls as a composer is with sounds. She cares about every feeling, every heart ache, every joy, every concern of girls' lives. The coping strategies she suggests are geared to every personality type of teen girl. Reading the book feels as if Jill, the writer is a wise teen girl who is reaching out to other teen girls out there with compassion. I recommend this book for every teenager, grandparent/parent, the faculty/administrators of girls schools and just about anybody who deals with girls.

This book is very useful. It speaks directly to teens and offers several ways to deal with negative thoughts about body image, eating, and other issues. The sections on positive perfectionism and negative perfectionism are helpful for teens and adults alike, offering specifics about how perfectionism can be a positive force in any person's life. As with the author's last book, I have bought copies for each of my teenaged nieces and our baysitters. I recommend it to any teen girl and her parents.

In the early months of World War II, the United States Navy recognized the need for ships to train pilots in carrier take-offs and landings. Realizing that current aircraft carriers already in service could not be used for this task, another approach was taken. Based on the recommendations of Commander R.F. Whitehead, the Navy acquired two Great Lakes pleasure cruisers: the S.S. Seeandbee and the S.S. Greater Buffalo. These ships were coal-fired sidewheelers which passengers rode on pleasure cruises on the Lakes. They were loaded with luxurious staterooms, atriums, and beautiful furniture. But, due to the needs of the war effort, they were purchased, stripped down, and converted into training aircraft carriers for pilots destined to fight in the Pacific War.The S.S. Seeandbee became known as the USS Wolverine, and the S.S. Greater Buffalo became known as the USS Sable. Each was dratically changed from their previous appearance so as to incorporate a flight deck and "island". The flight decks were approximately 500 feet long, but there was no way to store aircraft belowdecks. So, land bases were incorporated to house the planes and pilots. Training consisted of take-offs and landings. After a pilot successfully completed 14 of these, they were carrier-qualified and ready to face the enemy.The primary purpose for designing these ships was so that training would not have to have been conducted in either the Pacific or Atlantic oceans, because the risk of submarine or aerial attack was too great. Plus, escorting ships would have been required. By concentrating training on the Great Lakes, there was no need for escorts or armaments on the carriers. Over 17,000 pilots were qualifed for carrier combat during the war, and many of these pilots, including former President George H.W. Bush, trained on the Wolverine and Sable. These carriers served throughout the war.This is an excellent book and tells the story of two little-known ships of the U.S. Navy. Despite their autonomy, these ships played a vital role in the war effort. The book is packed with vintage photographs and informative text.I recommend this book very highly. If you're interested in naval aviation, then this book is a must-read.

While this chronicles a perhaps little-known aspect of naval pilot training on the Great Lakes, the writing is not particularly interesting. There are more pictures of the excursion ships prior to their conversion to training carriers than of the carriers in operation. This may simply be attributable to there being few images available. Most pictures are clearly printed on good quality paper.

The book covers a major part of Naval Aviation in WWII that few today and even during WWII knew that it played a major part in the winning of the air war in the Pacific.

This item was just as it was listed and arrived on time in perfect working order. We would buy from them again. A very interesting book, I would recommend it highly.

It was a great story on the development of these 2 carriers..I was somewhat disappointed in the lack of more stories on the actual takeoffs and landings, as I actually did myoriginal carrier landings on the " Wolverine"..We flew out of Glenview Naval Air Station and I still remember the golden dome on coming back to land.Thank youVince Neuman

It starts off by outlining the basic functionality of the Pi, including how to configure your Pi for different purposes, from server administration to Python programming, and even how to use it to manipulate hardware. The book is very well-written and easy to understand (as many Wiley books are), so even a complete beginner should have no problem learning with this book.The only downside to this book is that even though this edition was only published in 2014, it's already a little bit outdated, especially with the recent release of the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. You'll find that some of the commands listed in the book don't work 100% correctly, at least if you're using the most current version of Raspbian. However, a quick Google search of the problem, will turn up plenty of results on how to resolve the issues. Most of the time, it simply involves eliminating a word or two from a command, because it became obsolete between the time this edition was published and now.However, I would still recommend this book to anyone looking to start tinkering with a Raspberry Pi. I bought this book a few weeks ago, and with this book (and the help of a friend), I was able to quickly get a web server up and running where I am currently hosting a personal website, and I may even by another Pi to tinker around some more. I almost gave this book 3 stars due to the issues I had with some of the commands, but I think this book still functions as a good primer to the Raspberry Pi, and based on the quality of the content, deserved at least 4 stars.

This guide is well written and contains very useful information for anyone new to the world of RPi. Further, the Raspberry Pi is simply the most awesome little device that I've found in a very long time. Author spends too many pages/chapters on software that is not a clear tutorial of Python. A much better tutorial of the PI is available on the RaspberryPi.org website and a much more comprehensive explanation of Python is available on the Python.org website. The book might be better with more basic code examples that demonstrate the many programming strengths of Python and their interactions with the PI. This book is too choppy for a beginner and not in enough depth for an advanced user. I suggest looking elsewhere for a tutorial.

I skimmed through the book in an evening. I have some familiarity with Linux, but not the Pi platform so I thought this would be a good intro. The book covers basics of the types of board(A/B), what is on the board, installing an OS, a little programing intro, some info on projects you can build, and additional parts/components you can buy. The book will give you enough detail to get started. It is not a step by step manual. It would make a good book for a younger reader who is just getting started with raspberry pi or someone a little older who is curious about the platform.

I just received my CanaKit Raspberry Pi starter kit and this User's Guide by Eben Upton. The book is very up to date and explained everything I needed to know and needed to do to get the Raspian Linux O/S installed on the Pi, and get the board fired up. The details in the book matched the board and the actual software screens exactly. I had read part of the book before the kit came. Using this book, I had the Pi up and running Raspian in the GUI mode with a display, mouse, keyboard, and wireless WiFi in less than an hour after opening the box. I am not new to computers or electronic hardware, but I had not used Linux in many years, and had never set up a Linux system ever before. I am extremely pleased with this book. It provides a balance of console commands and explanation of the GUI apps. It also gets you into programming Scratch and Python just a bit, and also into the GPIO hardware interfacing just a bit. Now that I am up and running, I will be seeking out some more detailed reference books on Linux. -pete

Dr. Waldman, an American Jew, with strong family and religious ties to Israel relocates to Israel to work at the Hospital where the patients and the staff are a mixture of Jews, Muslims, and Christians and together they form a unit that works together to help and support children of all religions who are suffering from terrible cancers. While they navigate collectively to help all the children and their parents and relatives at all the stages of treatment, and in some cases simply to alleviate the pain and make patients as comfortable as possible who are at the end of life, the scene and politics and violence outside the hospital depict a picture so disturbing and horrifying that you wonder if there is any humanity left in the warring factions: factions who represent a small minority of the Arab and the Jewish populations but nevertheless create devastating effects and consequences for families seeking help for their sick families.Mr. Waldman's memoir might be the best in your face reality of what goes on in this part of the world that I have ever read. It is an engrossing piece of work and, throughout I found myself giving thanks to the brave men and women who work in a field that on its best days are difficult and on its worst days it could have you questioning everything you ever believed in.This is a piece of work that is going to stay with me for a very long time. It is simply amazing.

This memoir is written by a pediatric oncologist who moves to Israel to work in the Hadassah hospital. He experiences a lot of ambiguity in his relationships with patients, parents and co workers he has visited Israel but now he is a citizen. He experiences ambiguity I relating to patients, families,co workers and in adjusting to life in a different country. I rarely give 5 stars. This book deserves it!

I just finished reading Dr. Waldman’s book moments ago. His experiences and thought processes resonated very strongly for me. For too long, medicine has undervalued the human touch and the critical value of palliative care. The distinction of providing palliative care concurrently with actively caring for a patient exemplifies quality and complete care . This is a book many need to read. Thank you Dr. Waldman for being a visionary and staying on your path. Hadassah lost a special leader and opportunity to lead in this important direction. What a shame.

Elisha simultaneously tells the story of his career, his life and his soul. Bravo for a well written, moving tale of growth and struggle. Hope he has found his happily ever after.

This is a marvelous account of a pediatric oncologist and his journey through the maze of cultural and spiritual differences while practicing at the world reknowned Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem.Fascinating, poignant and unforgettable! A must for anyone who wants to see humanity at its best and worst, with hope in the midst of such conflict as cancer treatment options and war itself.

I purchased this because it came highly recommended on the Read Aloud Revival blog I follow for book recommendations. My 3 year old LOVED it and managed to memorize it near perfectly. I loved hearing him "reading" (reciting) it to himself. It was not cheesy bad rhyming like so many books these days. But be warned, if your family Thanksgiving is lacking any of the components of this dear book, your preschooler will not get over it ;)

This is a Thanksgiving book that we often gift to friends and family who are just beginning to grow their own Thanksgiving children's book collection. I will start to read it to my 3 and 5 year old, and before long I've somehow collected my 9, 11, and 13 year old. It really is wonderfully perfect.

The rhyming text for this charming Thanksgiving story is rich and tightly metered. It's use of periodic shifts in pattern keep readers engaged and signal transitions in the story. It has just the right blend of formality and charm to suit the era portrayed and will wear well through the repeated readings that are bound to occur. Kids will be chiming in before you know it.Time spent exploring the illustrations will reveal rich details as well as subtle relationships and many clues as tto the time period reflected. Book is very repetitive, with a lot of words on each page. I enjoy it, but my 18 mos son does not. Maybe when he's older, but I think it's too repetitive to be interesting.

We love this book! The rhyme is memorable and sweet. I was afraid it was going to be too old-fashioned-y, and while it taught a lot about the ways of Thanksgivings a long time ago, it was modern in its rhyme and storytelling. Sweet family book for the holiday!
