If you're playing a rogue/bard, you've probably seen this book before. It's got a few prestige classes for each class, and a bunch of random feats/equipment/skill tricks that you will want to bring into your game. This is by no means a must-have book, but it does have a lot of fluff and other interesting material to help inspire you.If you're willing to spend the extra money, Complete Scoundrel is a much better book, in my opinion. This book (as all books do) has some balance problems, so everything that comes out of here has to be run past the DM first.In total, this book is probably 110 pages of content, and as a player you'll use maybe a dozen of them.If you're buying this book as a gift, here are some things to know: This is a book for the 3rd edition of D&D. It can be uses with both 3.0e and 3.5e, with some minor tweaking. This cannot be used for any other editions (newer or older). Check with the birthday boy (or girl) to make sure this is the book (s)he needs.

This is a excellent suppliment for any gaming group, even those not prone to having strong social based parties. While most of the material on prestige classes may be found elsewhere and several of the feats do not translate to 3.5 the real beauty of this book are the sections on weapons, traps, organizations and instuments. Everyone knows how to run a hack and slash but having the opportunity to form an alternate persona and make a developed character to take on adventures most of us can only dream, isn't that why we all started playing this game? On this note I find the sections on weapons to be simple, but the few new choices offer benifits in such a select group of situations I find players will be inspired to try new and inventive tactic to utilize these new items. The section on traps has over 90 different idead with rules for making you own, thusly making every dungeon fresh, new and more deady than ever. It also inspires players to set their own ambushes, making combat more interesting thought provoking than the usual "I stab it" or "I use magic missle". Providing benifits for taking different instruments will also add more flavor than your standard lute weilding bard, and having the multitude of organizations adds plot ideas a plenty and great jumping off points for anyone wanting to stand out from the generic crop of rouges and bards that seem to plague most games.

I'd buy this book again because you can never have too many feats or prestige classes, especially for the always hard to play rogue. But in a word, this supplement is uninspired. Just a collection of mostly mediocre stuff of no great pizzaz. A few of the prestige classes are interesting (although the bard is severely shorted here). A few of the feats and spells are of interest. Most of the rest of it is of limited interest unless you like elaborate traps in which case it might be a tad more interesting for you.Of the 4 class supplements I have (Tome & Blood, Sword & Fist, Defenders of the Faith), this one is the worst. Hopefully it was a passing moment of insipidness. Otherwise, the rest of class guidebooks do not look promising.

Granted, I am one of WOTC's consumer drones: put a new source book for D&D on the market and I will buy it for my gaming group's library. The section on traps is definitely worth the cost of buying this book especially if your DM will permit your rogue to earn XP for defeating a nasty trap. Otherwise, the prestige classes offered simply give people options for player development. Myself, I favor a cleric/rogue multiclassed character. The saving throws tend to be well-rounded and no one minds that you have a tendency to shun melee combat. Well, except for that lunatic half-orc paladin in the front row.....

I own all of the WoTC expansion books and this one is the all around best. The other books are geared towards DM's, in that they create prestige classes which would make colorful NPC's. Song and Silence has a healthy selection of prestige classes that players would actually like to become. Futhermore, the feats are very well defined and thought out, and in some circumstances, improved (S&S redefines, for the better, some of the expansion feats in Sword and Fist).

Song and Silence is a decent tool to have if you play a rogue or bard, but it is by no means complete. Its a great supplement as for how to role play as well as various, optional instruments and other miscellaneous information, but I was rather disappointed in its selection of prestige classes. If you want to play your character more thoroughly this is a great book. Just keep in mind some of my favorite prestige classes (assassin, dirgesinger) are not in here.

Very useful guide for role playing a bard, I've had a lot of fun with it.

This is the 10th book in the “A Very Short Introduction” series that I have read. I note that there are more than 350 (and counting!) in the series, and would love to read the vast majority of them. Each provides a relatively concise, as the title implies, exposition of a particular topic, ranging, literally, from “Nothing” to “Infinity.” I had previously read and reviewed Coral Reefs: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions). That topic is covered in one of the eight chapters of this work. Our knowledge of the oceans, or, as Philip Mladenov says in the singular, “The Global Ocean,” which covers 71% of the planet, has grown exponentially over the last half century, with the knowledge obtained through the development of such inventions as the Scuba diving regulator and the bathyscaphe, a free-diving, self-propelled submersible, now capable of descending to the deepest ocean depths. The author, who published this work in 2013, provided this reader a much needed update on some of the advances in our knowledge of the oceans.The first chapter covers some useful characteristics of the Global Ocean. The easiest one for me to remember is that 10 meters of ocean water has the same pressure as all the air above it, in the atmosphere. Thus, when diving at 10 meters, thanks to the aforementioned regulator, it is possible to breathe, since the regulator releases air at “two atms,” (two atmospheres of pressure). Light will penetrate the ocean to a depth of 150-200 meters; but all the light in the red spectrum is absorbed in the first 10 meters of water, leaving the blues and the greens to penetrate deeper. The colder the water, the more oxygen it contains, with arctic water containing almost double that of the warmest ocean water. Seawater is slightly alkaline; the more carbon dioxide it contains, the lower the pH, and with enough CO2, the ocean will become acidic. The ocean is also in motion, with permanent currents, such as the Gulf Stream. In addition, there are sinking and rising currents, important for the transfer and replenishment of nutrients. Mladenov introduced me to the concept of “the Great Ocean Conveyor Belt” which spans the globe.The second chapter describes the essential biological processes, with roughly half of the planet’s “primary production,” that is, the synthesis of organic compounds by chlorophyll-bearing organisms using the sun’s energy, occurring in the ocean. This energy conversion is the basis of the “food chain,” with the bacterioplankton consumed by larger predators. The next five chapters describe the differences in marine life, and the adaptation to its environment in five different areas: coastal, polar, tropics, deep-ocean and intertidal. For me, the greatest increases in knowledge involved the deep-ocean area, which was pretty much a “blank page” in my youth. I learned that there is extensive (and very damaging) fishing on seamounts (extinct volcanoes) for such species as the orange roughy. Hydrothermal vents were discovered in 1977, at a depth of 2700 meters. More surprising, there is substantial life surrounding these vents, in one of the harshest of environments, with superheated acidic fluid, including hydrogen sulfide.Of the various factoids that I learned, as the author says, one of the more surprising is that the largest source of oil pollution in the ocean comes from small spills from cars, trucks and boats that wash into the ocean, some 72% of the total, as opposed to the “newsworthy” catastrophes, such as the “Exxon Valdez” and deep-ocean oil well “blow-outs.” The author’s concluding chapter concerns the ocean as a food source for the growing human population. He states that the yield from the ocean has essentially plateaued, and unless serious conservation measures are in place, and enforced, will most certainly decline. I've been an avid reader of marine science books since first discovering Rachel Carson's The Sea Around Us. For the average person, this book is a great choice, providing a thorough exploration of the ocean, its life and its processes. Regarding the title - it is not short, but this is a good thing! The author has a gift for imparting a great deal of information in a concise way - in other words, he's a great teacher. There's a good deal of disturbing information about the state of our global ocean and some books can overwhelm the reader to the point of depression. Sylvia Earle's The World is Blue is an example. I have the highest regard for Earle and what she has done to educate the world about the ocean, but her anger is evident on every page of her recent books and can leave the reader feeling hopeless, as many climate change books do. Somehow, Mladenov avoids this - his science is solid, brilliant and thorough and his steady, patient exploration retains a sense of wonder. This book IS technical and is not a children's book, but any child really interested in the subject would devour it. I read it over a period of many weeks - there's a lot to absorb, all of it worthwhile to learn and know and plenty of warnings for us to heed, but the author never resorts to fear-mongering, just education. The ocean is still alive and well and wondrous and immensely important to all of us. While this book may be too technical for some, such as very young children, it is a perfect choice for those of us who need both the science and the sense of wonder.

I read it because I’m a new SCUBA diver. This miracle of brevity weaves a web, paragraph after paragraph, linking together a host of key concepts into a comprehensible whole. Although I was familiar with the subject from years past, this was a fresh look at the subject and a primer on recent work in the field. Awesome.

I have no background in biology whatsoever. Mladenov’s book was nevertheless easy for me to follow and understand. It isn’t a comprehensive look at the subject – but none of the books in this series ever is. Instead, Mladenov concentrates on some of the modern problems concerning the world’s oceans, including environmental issues. This book is very good if you want a general understanding of the earth’s oceans and the animals that inhabit it.

I purchased this text as a teaching tool for an online course I am teaching. I am using it as an outline so I can hit upon the most important information in the short amount of time the course will run. It is written as more of an ecological text rather than a taxonomic laundry list of organisms that inhabit the oceans.

I've a Ph.D. in the life sciences, though not in marine biology and not recently. I found this to be extremely readable and understandable and gave me information I wanted for my new passion: scuba. (A PhD is not required for this book, though a basic understanding of physics is helpful.)

Catelyn, in return, could continue to use their marriage photo for her own advertising purposes.As can be expected, the two of them begin to develop real feelings for each other, and the fake marriage starts to feel real. Their attraction is very strong for each other. But when a misunderstanding makes Catelyn run away, what will Rami do? Does he truly want her back? Does he want to make the relationship work?I thought this was a very clever story line and I really enjoyed the book. The main characters were definitely likable and the reader cares how it all turns out for them. The humorous touches were perfect in this well-written story. Grab your copy and see how everything sorts out.

I enjoyed reading about Rami and Catelyn. There was instant attraction between them when they met at Catelyn's mentor and friend Lydia's home party. Catelyn though desperate, was ingenious when she came up with a plan to save her wedding business. Rami being business minded person, used this opportunity so that both he and Catelyn would benefit professionally from it. From the beginning their chemistry exploded. It was off the charts and was hot and heavy. It was sad that Catelyn had agreed to a one-year marriage of convenience. As she spent time with Rami, she started dreaming of wanting more. Catelyn helped Rami with his communication skills so that he could win the contract from Lydia. When the time came to sign, Lydia threw a wrench into the deal. Rami was not having it and spoiled the deal. Here is where it befuddles me that Rami came to a conclusion after a mere few weeks with Catelyn he wanted forever with her. Everything in the story was going great until that point. It seemed too rushed with the problems of the deal and the problems of the relationship. It did however end with a happily ever after. I enjoyed this romance. I thought the plot was fun and it held my attention well. I liked Catelyn and Rami and I thought the chemistry between them really sizzled. I could understand Catelyn's desire to help her company succeed but I did think it was quite farfetched that she would use such a famous, powerful person. I mean definitely not smart. That being said, since that was the backbone that supported the whole story line, you just have to go with it and enjoy the characters, their attraction and the romance that blossoms between them. This is my honest, voluntary review.

Rami and Catelyn are thrown together due to some late night drinking and working on her bridal consultant company website where she creates the perfect wedding scenario with her as the bride and Rami as the groom, thinking he will never see it. Rami does see it and realizes it could work to his advantage as he needs a wife. They decide to get together for a limited period of time upon where they would divorce except feelings begin to get in the way. What was once a marriage of convenience soon turns to one full of passion and though they're both scared to admit it, love.This is one of my favorite stories and yeah, I've said that before, but Rami and Catelyn are funny, cute, and I was rooting for them to get an HEA.5 stars from me and I can't wait to read Rami's brothers stories as well.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
