Review

“This is surely the best, most personal, profound, eye-opening book ever written about prostitution―irrefutable proof of why it should NEVER be legalized.” - Jane Fonda“People who are working to end sexual exploitation will take heart from her example of transformation and an insistence on basic human dignity.” - President Jimmy Carter“Rachel Moran takes us where no readers have ever gone: into the deep hell of being prostituted… Anyone who believes "sex work" is chosen or a job like any other should read Paid For for its exposure of misinformation and myths alone. But the book is more: Moran writes so well that her story will scorch your heart….” - Robin Morgan“No amount of theory from those who have never been prostituted can replace the truth and power of experience. Rachel Moran's Paid For should be required reading in courses on human rights, in police training and law schools, and in sex education courses that separate welcome sex from body invasion.” - Gloria Steinem“Paid For fuses the memoirist's lived poignancy with the philosopher's conceptual sophistication. The result is riveting, compelling, incontestable. Impossible to put down. ” - Catharine A. MacKinnon, law professor, University of Michigan and Harvard University“As a survivor, I can say Paid For got to the heart of what sex-trafficked and prostituted women face on a daily basis. Rachel speaks for those survivors who can’t speak for themselves, and for those who have been lost to the life.” - Vednita Carter, Founder and Executive Director, Breaking Free“Paid For is the political sword we desperately need to slay once and for all the myths and fairytales surrounding the sex trade. Sojourner Truth once said that truth is powerful and it prevails. Rachel Moran's earth-shaking book embodies just that.” - Taina Bien-Aimé, Executive Director, Coalition Against Trafficking in Women“Rachel Moran demolishes the “Pretty Woman” myth with the stark reality of the lived experience of her young years in prostitution. This memoir makes a strong case for the Nordic model law that criminalizes the buyers whose money drives the trade that treats women as objects for sale.” - Terry O'Neill, President, National Organization for Women

As a male who has personally struggled against the idea of whether prostitution is moral or not, this book has served its purpose of clarifying my ethical standings. After reading this book, it has become crystal clear to me that prostitution is an evil force that must be done away with at once. I am not a puritan, nor a religious fanatic, just a man with plain common sense that read a book from someone who has been there and is articulating her story. Now, before I go into the insights I have gained from this book, I would like to thank Rachel Moran for aiding in my personal development and contributing to human society with her wonderful work in this book. The book is not perfect by any means, but it is a wonderfully written and enjoyable piece. I read it in 4 days. Despite the mental and physical hardship she's endured, Rachel has managed to write a book that is very insightful and much better written than many books & articles I have read from Columbia or Stanford graduates. Now without further ado, let me list the key insights I have obtained from this book. They are not the only insights one can gain, but those are the ones that spoke to me the most.1) Prostitution promotes secrecy. A very bad psychological habit for both parties engaging in the act.2) Homelessness is often the introductory road to prostitution. Homeless is a particularly harsh condition, one can understand why women resort to selling themselves as a means of escaping homelessness. Prostitution is therefore mainly a substitution for complete poverty.3) Prostitution is paid rape, or paid to be sexually used. This stroke a deep chord with me by the way, because I never saw it that way.4) The transaction occurring during the act of prostitution is not occurring between two equal parties. In essence, the male with monetary, educational, and social access is exploiting the female who lacks these resources to fulfill his sexual gratifications.5) Prostitutions hate their clients. They pretend to like them so that the act can be more tolerable for the Johns (another word for clients)6) Males who engage in buying prostitutes are psychologically training themselves to be sexually abusive to women whether they know it or not7) A society that legalizes prostitution obscures moral boundaries within the collective, I found this remark to be very important.8) Current legislation against prostitution are not to ban prostitution but mainly to move it indoors, away from public view.9) Prostitution massacres the body, soul, and mind of the women who do it. The "Happy Hooker" story is a myth.10) Men need a lot of education on the subject if this problem is to ever done with completely. The book is simply spectacular. It is well written, describes graphical details, is packed with real emotions, and provides a glimpse of hope for the future. I hope to meet and fund Rachel Moran one day. She has an organization called SPACE (Survivors of Prostitution-Abuse Calling for Enlightenment).. I'll definite write her a check if God gives me the chance. Conclusion: Book is amazing, buy it now and support this brave woman!

This is the best book on Prostitution that I have ever read. However,This book not only meets that standard, It is by far the Best book I have ever read. This should be required reading in a multitude of classes on Social Policy as well as topics in Therapy such as Therapuetic Process designed to heal from various abuses. First Ms. Moran describes her inner life as a child and then traces her inner life all the way through her life and through the book and in doing so opens up answers to all the questions anyone would have ever had about what prostitutes deal with and REALLY go though in the work they do night and day. Spoken with candor, transparency, depth of feeling and awareness, and sensitivity, Ms. Moran cannot help but look around to find multitudes of supporters and allies in anyone who reads this book.. As a social worker, this book has given me new life in areas of interest I have already had. As a woman this book has offered many areas of self reflection about past relationships and levels of behavioral dysfunction that women learn to tolerate and how in our psyche this is done. This book is not written with any "bias" or with any hidden agenda but answers a need in myriad areas of cross disciplinary discussion, knowledge and policymaking. OUTSTANDING and EXCELLENT. I recommend this to everyone I know.

This is a book that every father should buy for his son on his 21st birthday. Ms. Moran’s treatment of this highly misunderstood flaw in men’s psychies, that has existed for literally hundreds of years, is nothing short of riveting. If you are looking for a book that reveals highly sexual content then go somewhere else as Ms Moran only, and rarely, shares these details to make her point that prostitution is an evil, vile imposition on women, no matter how it is served up. A very brave work by a women who hundreds of men should have loved, not violated. Yes, prostitution is a choice, but so is jumping off of a bridge ...a choice only made by people who have been through so much emotional and psychological abuse that it actually appears to be a solution.

This tome reads like a Pulitzer pride winner. Rachel start out in her childhood, & on and why,she had to see herself.what her limited options for a girl from a broken home.I am Rooting for her gradual success and I mourn, her bad plans, too.Talk about the strength of the human condition. It’s set in Ireland. It is a heavy read, due to lots of characters, and scene-setips. Force yourself to stick with us, I am happy I perserved.this is a sad but very prevalent problem since the dawn of time. I read it in 2 settings and its worth! A headache.Your heart will break, but all for the Right, reasons. A real Triumph.buy this book, ok??!!!

What a brave, strong, intelligent woman Rachel Moran is. Her personal account of life as a prostitute and the industry itself, is insightful and very revealing. She pulls no punches in this account. At times I found myself close to tears, at others almost gagging with revulsion. Some of the experiences she recounted filled me with anger that flared into rage. The commodification of women and the degradation they're subjected to within prostitution is shown in vivid detail. The attitudes of the 'punters' is truly stomach churning. This book doesn't make comfortable reading, but I believe it is an important work that SHOULD be read by men and women alike.

This is an important look at prostitution. Moran shatters stereotypes and introduces new ways to think about this exploitation. She uses her own experience in prostitution, stories from other prostituted individuals, and extensive research to explain entering this industry, the effects of prostitution on the body and mind, interactions with others, the struggle to emerge from prostitution, and many other topics. The book is well organized and easy to follow. It is not an easy read emotionally and forces the read to confront this topic and all of its ugliness, but it is a very important, unique work.

Fascinating book! It likely tells all there is to know about the Do 335, I suspect. I've always thought this was one of the coolest airplanes ever designed since I first saw some drawings and photos of it back in the 1960s. Later, William Green's book "Warplanes of the Third Reich" provided the first really detailed information on its development and performance. This book completes the story. The airplane is also a perfect example of the complete disorganization of the German aircraft industry and the Luftwaffe air ministry. The airplane never entered mass production yet the Luftwaffe was planning to develop and produce ten variations of the Do 335A and another ten variations of the Do 335B. That doesn't include the development of the Ju 635 "Twin." The concept of focusing on ONE model of any given airplane design and producing it in large numbers just didn't enter the German mind.Chapter 6 "Assessment and Legacy" is also very good. Essentially, the Do 335 just wasn't a mature engineering and production design. It was too rushed under the pressures of war. It needed another one to two years of calm and methodical evaluation and engineering design effort to resolve issues such as the cooling of the rear engine and the weak undercarriage. My only criticism is that there are no tabulations of dimensions and performance characteristics. Some data is given within the text.

The German aircraft industry seems to have been unusually inventive, and as the Second World War went badly for the Third Reich, even more so. This Osprey X Planes Series book discusses the Dornier Do 335, a large fighter-like aircraft which featured propellers at both ends. The Do 335 was envisioned for a variety of uses, including reconnaissance, night fighter, and even long range anti-submarine patroller. As the Third Reich collapsed in 1945, the Do 335 was just entering the initial production process. Knowledgeable Allied observers marveled at the surviving prototypes. This concise study by Robert Forsyth has lots of discussion about the design and development processes. The narrative is nicely boosted by period photographs, diagrams, and modern illustrations. This study of another "might-have-been" is recommended primarily to aviation enthusiasts.

The below is a review of the NOOK electronic edition of this work.Any review of this book would have to start off by stating it is part of Osprey Publishing’s X Plane series. It is, as such, relatively short at only 80 pages of which, very roughly, a third consists of illustration of one type or another. Hence if one is looking for an academic tome this is not the book to purchase. The relevant question is how well does this book considering the constraints imposed on it by its format? The answer is very well. The book provides a detailed history of the development of aircraft, from its genesis through testing to its end at the end of the war (basically being flown from base to base to avoid capture). There is a detailed history of its creator, Dornier, starting by his design of float planes after the first world war through various other aircraft. There is quite a bit of detail on test pilots. There is also a discussion of how the aircraft’s purpose, like that of the ME 262 jet, early on was on bombing (even though the aircraft was much more suited for use as a heavy fighter) and how there was so much emphasis on so many different functions that development of the aircraft was seriously delayed. This was despite the importance placed on it by leading figures in the Luftwaffe like Goering. Not that multi-functionality and inability to concentrate on purpose were the only developmental problems. Others factors contributing to the long development of the aircraft included the complexity of the design. The aircraft’s huge size lead to landing gear problems as well as engine development problems (many times leading to fires). Towards the end of the war, just as the aircraft was ready for production, Germany’s strategic situation was such that just manufacturing the aircraft became a serious problem. With respect to illustrations, something that Osprey books are known for, the book is quite good. There are plenty of contemporaneous photographs of the aircraft as well as test pilots. In addition the cockpit is very well illustrated in detail and there are numerous cutaway drawings of the plane. This reviewer has only two criticisms with respect to illustrations. One is that there should have been a large cutaway of the entire aircraft instead of the current too small one. In addition, there should have been a large-scale drawing/painting of the aircraft as a whole from a variety of angles (i.e., top, bottom, sides, front and back). All of the above are positives of the book. Unfortunately it also has a few serious negatives. One relates to the fact that the book is filled with far too much minutiae. In a large book this would not have proven a problem but in a short book, where one needs to concentrate on the most important things, it is a problem. The writer spends far too much time providing too many details on test pilots, the locations of testing facilities, far too much detail on test flights as well as the episodes involving the movement of aircraft from one base to another towards the very end of the war. Again, it is not that this not interesting, just that this is too much time spent on these topics for a book of such limited length. That space could have been used much more productively, in this reviewer’s opinion, on much more important questions and topics. These include a detailed discussion and analysis of how well the aircraft could have fulfilled the functions it was intended for. For example, how well could it have performed as heavy fighter against bomber formations (i.e., the book only has two to three sentences on this)? Considering the fighters heavy armament (it was equipped with 30mm guns), armour plating (excellent defense against the hail of .50 caliber bullets it would face from bomber’s defensive guns) and its very high speed (very good way of getting through large numbers of escorting fighters that were slow than this plane) it would have made an extraordinary heavy fighter. How well would have the plane served in the reconnaissance role? An analysis comparing this plane’s speed and that of allied interceptors would have been very relevant here. Unfortunately none is provided. How would have the plane have served as an air superiority fighter? The book mentions that it performed well against a FW 190 in one mock combat. However, considering the aircraft’s weight (very, very heavy relative to single engine fighter) which would have resulted in relatively limited maneuverability, combined with the fact that it was equipped with only heavy guns with limited ammunition relative to lighter caliber guns (heavy guns would be good against bombers but not so good against lighter fighters) how accurate could this assessment, based on only one mock duel, have been? This reviewer would take of a star to star and half for the aforementioned problems.

An interesting idea, twelve essays on Watchmen. I picked it up hoping to get more information about the "Charlton" background, the sixties superheros like Captain Atom and the Question whose stories Allan Moore proposed to delve into more deeply. And a few of these essays cover this aspect fairly well:"... Ditko, following in the footsteps of his philosophical mentor, applied the same 'law of identity' to the question of good and evil, as in this lecture by Mister A [...] to his television audience: A truth is truth for all, an absolute! To compromise, to give up any part of a truth is to wipe out justice, to choose some evil over the good, to renounce man's means, reason and logic which makes his success and happiness possible! Each man must make his own choice! A is A or anything goes! -- For Ditko, 'reason and logic' are the tools by which humankind knows truth."As with Shakespeare studies, Austen studies, or even Lebowski studies, the reader is struck, sooner or later, with the inadequacy of even the best literary criticism. Some of the interpretations here struck me as depressingly wrong:"... At the end of the story, Moore plays with the notion that, while Rorschach is the detective and Veidt is the culprit, because Veidt's actions had altruistic motivations and Rorschach refuses to support them, perhaps Rorschach is the villain and Veidt the hero after all.""... We see early on that, rough around the edges though he may be, Blake is a man who tries to find answers. Consider that even when he commits an act of rape, he verbalizes his justification as a response to an unasked question. 'C'mon baby,' he tells Sally Jupiter, 'I know what you need. You gotta have some reason for wearin' an outfit like this.' Even in his darkest moments, the Comedian tries to understand."Every such 'false note,' is more than matched by something striking and worthwhile on the other side of the ledger. I particularly liked this bit of gossip in one of the later essays:"... One of the main complaints to be made about Watchmen is that it is depressing, pessimistic, cynical, and nihilistic. In its negative reviews on Amazon.com, this is the most common source of the single star ratings. Even a powerhouse like Grant Morrison can use this complaint to distance himself and his work from the crushing influence of Moore's major work. When Matt Brady from Newsarama asked if a sandwich-sign doomsayer, glimpsed in the opening of the concluding issue of Morrison's Final Crisis mini-series, was intended as a nod to Rorschach, Morrison sarcastically responded, 'Watchmen? What's that? Is that the one where the hero dog gets its head kicked in? Sweet.' It is a hard objection to deny.

I enjoyed the essays on Watchmen. They had some views that I was not aware of and I started to see Watchmen with a different view. I appreciated the fact that, even after all these years you can look at the graphic novel and still learn something. Thank you for an enjoyable read.

Although I've read Watchmen many, many times - many things, themes, and details are brought forward by each essay. Enjoyably readable.

Fan product for fans. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nicely written and generally compelling arguments on Watchmen. Does a good job of contextualizing in the larger history of comics.

This book should be read by fans of Watchmen. The essays are an excellent companion to the graphic novel. They will give you insight and information a casual reader may not know.

I only got half way through this when the kindle I downloaded just died. This is the kind of book you read only once or maybe twice in your life time and then throw away. But if you are really interested in others peoples thoughts on watchman check this out.

My boyfriend is really into comics; until I met him, I never understood the significance they played in american culture.Loving my boyfriend, I asked him what he enjoyed about comics. He told me the dynamic stories accompanied by art made comics a unique experiences that was different from any other type of media. I then asked him who some of his favorite comic celebrities were, he replied "Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis".I opened up my Kindle later that evening and found Watchmen... WOW. I finally understood what he meant. Searching for more material to read, I noticed I could borrow this for free on Amazon Prime. So Friday I borrowed this book and finished it Sunday.
