John Resig is the Dean of Open Source and head of JavaScript development at Khan Academy and the author of the book Pro JavaScript Techniques. This book is heavily concentrated on explaining why JavaScript is a functional programming language and how that can be used by the developer. The half of the book is dedicated to JavaScript functions, there is everything you will need to know about JavaScript functions: anonymous functions, recursions, inline named function ans so on.The other half of the book explains everything that you will need to develop well structured JavaScript code.The only remark I have for this book is about the 'Regular Expressions' chapter, in my opinion it is not written very clear and can be confusing, but it is fer to say that the authors are suggesting additional literature for getting familiar with regular expressions.Big plus is that all the source code form the book examples is very well structured and packed in zip file that enables you to quickly try the examples on computer.
I am still reading the book and I have to say that so far I have enjoyed it. Even for a relatively new javascript programmer, this book is excellent in catching concepts that are ignored in most other web development books, primarily because it considers JS as a full fledge language which is the correct approach to explain javascript. That being said, a mastery of any object oriented programming language such as Java definitely helps to grasp the concepts explained in this book.Its a good buy, and I highly recommend it. Appreciate the author's sense of humor every once in a while - its like a team member actually explaining stuff to you during code reviews :)
A tremendous book. It explains nice and in a very plain vocabulary.It'll show you how to get started with the main and basics concepts of JavaScript. Will start showing code and core functions for later keep introducing all the implementations that we can do. First JavaScript, Tests, Libraries differences (or implementations from JavaScript frameworks) and jQuery.Reading this, will make you adopt in a very easy way any framework or JavaScript library.
Though perhaps a little dated since ES6+ features are out, this is still a very valuable read. I initially read it a couple of years ago and even re-reading it now I have learned some things.
This book gives great insight into the working of functions and closures in Javascript.What is nice is that every bit of theory is accompanied with some code examples from libaries like jQuery or Prototype, and the examples are explained very well.One minor negative point is that there are also a lot of pages in the book which are dedicated to deprecated statements like 'eval' and 'with'. It's nice to know how they work, but you shouldn't use them anyway so an entire chapter for each of them seems like too much attention.
This book is outstanding. I've read quite a few programming books in the past 12 years - this book is easily in the top 10 for how valuable it has been to me. Especially chapters 1-6. Particularly chapter 6. If you can grasp that, you will have a very solid understanding of the core language of JavaScript. Once you understand the core of JavaScript, other books or examples make much more sense.
As an old COBOL and RPG coder forced into the J2EE world, this book was a life saver. It turned the undecipherable swirl of client side code into a more manageable pile of spaghetti. I high recommend for experience coders looking for a few "whys" to go with the "how to". I feel I finally understand closures and prototypes.
Javascript Ninja, I'm not. At least not yet; but this book has certainly showed me the path to Ninjahood. This book has shown me the power of Javascript most casual web developers don't realize exists. John Resig shows parts of Java most books don't cover in depth. Be advised though that if you are a white belt in javascript, this may not be the book for you.
