I attended a Guy Tal "Talk" and was incredibly inspired by him. He told us about his new book soon to be released. I told him I had a love hate relationship with Photoshop and he said most do, but my new book will possibly change that relationship. I received it two days ago and have been devouring it. This is not your normal instructional book on Photoshop. Guy leads you from the artistic visualization to the digital realization of a printed image. He lightly addresses the critical components of a digital image unlike any other authors I've read. This will be a game changer for me!

I bought this book and could barely put it down for 3 days. Not only is it one of the best books I’ve seen in years on how to develop and execute a straight forward work flow for one’s photographs using Photoshop BUT, the author causes one to ponder “what do I want the final photo to look like”? Is it a straight forward recording of what one visualized thru the lense, or is there an emotional thread to follow?

Really nice guide to the Photoshop tools of interest to anyone using Photoshop to process fine art photography, not just for landscape photographers! Cuts nicely through the bloatware that has crept into the product to let you take full advantage of the current versions.

Guy Tal is a great writer and photographer. I could not put the book down because of the combination of outstanding images and writing. Tal is a strong advocate of Ansel Adams’ concept of scene visualization, he’s renewed my interest in photography.

This book is so much more than a "how to" on photoshop. Mr. Tal gets at the reasons to take photographs, and how to express yourself through your art. Highly recommended for any landscape photographer!

Easy to follow and understand.

Guy Tal’s latest book is The Landscape Photographer’s Guide to Photoshop a Visualization-Driven Workflow published by Rocky Nook. This book also covers the creative visualization process that supports quality nature photography. The author covers digital basics including histograms and image analysis. I liked the section on defect gaps which identified types of image problems and prescribed solutions. He has provided sensible suggestions for setting up your computer and establishing a Photoshop workflow. he author advises the use of ACR and Photoshop with a minimal use of Lightroom for editing based on the more powerful tools available in Photoshop. I use Lightroom to do the simple editing and when I need more precise or complicated work done I will do it Photoshop. In addition raw conversion and Photoshop basics are explained. Adjustments, Layers, cropping and other editing techniques are covered as well. There is a large section on black and white images which I found useful. In particular the use of multiple filters to improve image quality. I have been using Nik software but Guy has made points here that has me reconsidering using Photoshop for certain black and white images instead. There is also section on blending images. My interest was piqued by the focus stacking and mitigation of noise discussions which I will incorporate these processes in my workflow. The last two chapters are using images and a recap of the workflow. In conclusion this is a concise, clearly written book that covers most Photoshop areas that a landscape photographer would use. It is not intended to cover all Photoshop features, such a book could be close to a thousand pages.

It's not a new idea to suggest that to create photographic art, it is useful to visualize how the image will look after it has been manipulated by the photographer, to reveal something not only of the subject but also of how the photographer expresses himself. Ansel Adams did that almost seventy-five years ago. What Guy Tal does is to update that to the modern digital age in a clear and concise manner.Tal begins his book with a theoretical foundation, providing a brief history of art and explaining what he means by visualization. He explores the nature of the digital process, emphasizing the importance of analyzing the steps that must be taken to alter the captured image to look like the visualized image. In the second part of the book, he explains the practical tools that are available in Adobe Photoshop for these alterations.Tal is didactic and opinionated. He does not believe that merely showing the beauty of a landscape that exists without altering its image to impose the photographer's vision can create great Art. (In fact, I wondered if he thought that any mere creation of a realistic view could be Art.) He dismisses Lightroom as being totally inadequate for creating Art. Precise local adjustments are almost always essential to create Art. This is not a book to learn how to use Photoshop. The author only talks about those tools that he uses in making adjustments to his landscape photographs. (You probably noticed that I keep capitalizing Art. Tal doesn't do this, but I felt as if he did.)I don't completely disagree with Tal. I usually send the images I want to keep from Lightroom to Photoshop because the Photoshop selection tools allow me a degree of precision in applying tone, color and other adjustments that is just beyond Lightroom. On the other hand, Tal would save many of the global adjustments that I make in Lightroom for Photoshop. And although he acknowledges the possibility that a great image can be produced in Lightroom, he seems to say it is highly unlikely.Even though I'm not on all fours with the author, I think the light that he throws on Photoshop's capabilities is important for anyone who is interested in maximizing the opportunity to create Art. As I said in my review of his book "More Than a Rock: Essays on Art, Creativity, Photography, Nature, and Life", Tal makes me question my behavior and practices as an artist, which is not a bad thing. I have already determined to return to several of the photographs that I've already created and to burnish them further with the techniques he advocates. The book claims to be aimed at landscape photographers, but I believe that the theory and practices which the author advocates have their place with other genres of photography.Tal spends very little of this book telling you how to develop the visualization that's essential to his process. There are references to ideas like darkness may have an ominous tone, but this is not the thrust of the book (and indeed, of very few photographic instruction books I've encountered). Were Tal to write such a book, I would certainly be interested. It would be satisfying to say that this is a book for anyone who wants to create photographic Art, but that would be unrealistic. Rembrandt had to learn how to mix paints and use brushes before he began creating his masterpieces and the photographer will find it easier to grasp Tal's advice if he is competent with his camera and his software.Note: The publisher provided me with a review copy of this book at no charge.
