From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Everyone helps prepare Thanksgiving dinner in this new holiday offering set in the 19th century. From fetching the cooking pot to folding pilgrim hats, each of the 10 members in this family has a job to do. Narrated by the younger brother in rhyming four-line verse, each spread highlights one aspect of the meal preparations and the relative responsible for it: sister kneads the bread dough, grandpa cooks the berries, auntie mashes the potatoes, etc. The youngster's excitement with the day is conveyed through repetition and simple rhymes and rhythm that mirror the ease with which the family works together in anticipation of their meal. McElmurry's illustrations depict a traditional middle-class family in aprons over their Sunday best. The gouache on watercolor paper affords a three-dimensional, old-fashioned quality to the setting and characters, while the ever-present family dog and cat offer relatable detail for today's digital natives. Muted tones of brown, gray, blue, and black dominate the color scheme and lend authenticity to this celebratory tribute to our national holiday. VERDICT This book captures the spirit of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner but may require hand-selling to kids to secure a trip to the circulation desk.—Lynn Van Auken, Oak Bluffs School, MA

I purchased this because it came highly recommended on the Read Aloud Revival blog I follow for book recommendations. My 3 year old LOVED it and managed to memorize it near perfectly. I loved hearing him "reading" (reciting) it to himself. It was not cheesy bad rhyming like so many books these days. But be warned, if your family Thanksgiving is lacking any of the components of this dear book, your preschooler will not get over it ;)

This is a Thanksgiving book that we often gift to friends and family who are just beginning to grow their own Thanksgiving children's book collection. I will start to read it to my 3 and 5 year old, and before long I've somehow collected my 9, 11, and 13 year old. It really is wonderfully perfect.

The rhyming text for this charming Thanksgiving story is rich and tightly metered. It's use of periodic shifts in pattern keep readers engaged and signal transitions in the story. It has just the right blend of formality and charm to suit the era portrayed and will wear well through the repeated readings that are bound to occur. Kids will be chiming in before you know it.Time spent exploring the illustrations will reveal rich details as well as subtle relationships and many clues as tto the time period reflected. I can imagine manny classroom activities, including compare/contrast with personal experiences and modern day life.

What a great way to show children that everyone can contribute to Thanksgiving dinner - men as well as women, elders as well as youngsters. The rhyming text carries the story along and there is plenty to look at in the illustrations. Wonderful folk-art quality to the pictures. This is a keeper for Thanksgiving reading.

Book is very repetitive, with a lot of words on each page. I enjoy it, but my 18 mos son does not. Maybe when he's older, but I think it's too repetitive to be interesting.

We love this book! The rhyme is memorable and sweet. I was afraid it was going to be too old-fashioned-y, and while it taught a lot about the ways of Thanksgivings a long time ago, it was modern in its rhyme and storytelling. Sweet family book for the holiday!

Very nice, calming, detailed story. My kids really liked it.

nice blend of the old and new
