About the Author

J. David Ford was a "native born son," born in the arctic, but he straddled distinct ways of life: white man versus Inuit (Eskimo) and Innu (Indian); the hardships of northern arctic life versus the easier existence of "the outside" world - Newfoundland - where his family had relatives, where they went on leave or for medical attention; the Hudson's Bay Company expectations to conduct astute business practices versus caring for members of the community and taking responsibility for the ongoing needs of the local people. He was a native born son but an outsider, part Inuit but living a white man's life in an HBC employee frame house. His parents, whose ancestors had lived in the arctic for generations, knew that his survival in the north depended on what he learned from his Inuit friends but also thought it was important for him to go to Newfoundland for five years to finish high school. This dichotomy honed his abilities as an observer and recorder of a time in history that was about to perish, the end of an era and a way of life that changed drastically after the war.

Marnie Hare Bickle’s Native Born Son: The Journals of J. David FordNative Born Son offers a clear, affectionate insight into everyday life in Canada’s eastern arctic in the early decades of the 20th century – a time when human safety was achieved only by managing a merciless environment by dint of competence and collaboration. We are privileged to see this period through the perceptive eyes and unadorned words of trader and hunter David Ford. David was born at the Hudson’s Bay Company trading post in Fort Chimo (now Kuujjuaq) in 1910 when the Ungava Peninsula was divided between Canada’s Northwest Territories and the Dominion of Newfoundland.Marnie Hare Bickle has ably edited David’s reminiscences into a captivating account covering more than two decades. Michele E. Collins’ maps and illustrations are a welcome complement. The reminiscences begin in Wakeham Bay (now Kangiqsujuaq) and move on to Cape Wolstenholme and Coats Island. Then follow his six years of boarding school in St Johns and his return to join his parents on Southampton Island where his father had established a new trading post at Coral Harbour (now Salliq or Salliit). The editor’s introduction suggests that there was much, much more material to select from. The author who emerges from the selection of these journals is an observant, quietly self-confident individual with the capacity to reflect on and react with sensitivity to the daily life around him. The narrative is an account of the growing from childhood to manhood of an intelligent, reflective, articulate and empathetic individual, equally at home with the indigenous peoples of the north as with the Europeans who had lived and traded across the arctic for centuries seeking mutual advantage. David’s comfort is unsurprising since his blood-lines drew from both cultures. In the most profound sense, he was a native-born son who genuinely embraced the arctic as his home and native land.Multiple ingredients are woven seamlessly into the narrative: the bewitching landscape of which the weather is an integral part; all that it takes for a community to survive in that environment; David’s friendship and profound respect for the indigenous peoples; and the affection and esteem he is held in for his insight, compassion, dependability and leadership. The arctic presents many dangers – lasting storms, bitter cold, the volatile floe-edge, moving ice-pans that can outrun a kayak, the polar bear seeking prey. The best way to stay safe was not (and is not) to shun the dangers but to develop the capability to address them with skill. David learned early, on the trapline with his father and with his indigenous playmates. At eight, he enjoyed his first successful polar bear hunt.David’s candid accounts of the contest between man and his prey are vivid. Remember that this was a time when there was little or no option but to rely on skills and collaboration to find the means to survive. In one memorable exploit after another, the author encourages the reader to summon up the consciousness of the life of the tribe that hunts – a feeling lost in our age of processed meat so anonymous that we can ignore it comes from animals that lived. The tiny trading posts in the Canadian arctic are supplied annually with goods sought from Europe. The annual Hudson’s Bay Company supply ship, the Tyne-built Nascopie, braves the dangerous summer waters to replenish the essentials required by indigenous groups and traders and to return with furs, ivory and ambergris. One year, ice conditions make it impossible for the Nascopie to reach Coral Harbour. David, Nattakkok, Koosherak and Kowjakudluk set off in a whaleboat to pursue a Greenland whale that will guarantee enough meat for all for the entire winter. The expedition is successful though it takes them 28 days. Despite having now provided the community with the bare essentials, they refuse to revert to mere subsistence living, and so eight men with four dogsleds undertake a trek to the trading post at Repulse Bay (now Naujaat). Forty-seven days and 1500-miles later, they return to Coral Harbour with supplies of flour, tea, sugar, molasses, tobacco, coffee and the most coveted item of all – matches.David’s account of leading that expedition accompanied by seven Inuit friends offers an insight into the essential nature of such dangerous travel. Like hunting, long-distance travel is a social affair in which eight men and 33 huskies working side by side, overcoming extreme challenges to demonstrate that man will not be subjected by nature. By exercising their ingenuity, collaboration, courage, mutual respect and judgement honed of centuries of experience, they surmount all that nature can throw at them. They earn the right to call themselves “pre-eminent men” -- David’s rendering of how Inuit refer to themselves and a name they extend to the author who they acknowledge as a resourceful leader. This account of life in the arctic is neither romantic nor sentimental. The author carries within him two traditions at a time of mutual dependence on trade goods that include rifles, metal tools and matches. How the hunter-gatherer relates to animals can appear callous to those who know animals only as pets and hunting as a form of recreation.Just as a pack of wolves is innocent when it kills and devours a caribou, so David and his companions are free of guilt when they pursue the 45-ton whale or recently-cubbed adult polar bear that provide sustenance for the village. Each is acting out the biological imperative of the species; each is engaging in an essential form of social life. David recounts how hunters must tell, retell and act out every step of the hunt, as a traditional social ritual. Such people are confident in the company of one another and are bound by a common endeavour which strengthens the well-being of their group. The immediacy of David Ford’s forthright and unselfconscious narratives may stir an atavistic longing for the apparently simple relations that all our primal ancestors once enjoyed. Nevertheless, upon reflection we are likely to feel grateful that no longer does the continuous survival of any Canadian depend exclusively upon hunting and the raw exchange of basics.Every Canadian should read Native Born Son in order to savour the past vicariously in the company of those who belong to the northern frontier, indigenous and settler alike, while appreciating from their comfortable, educated, secure and healthy vantage points, the progress that has been made and is now enjoyed by all.Despite the editor’s thumbnail portrait of David Ford in the introduction as a “character, eccentric, a teller of tall tales” his accounts of travels and of exploits, for this reviewer who frequently travelled to the Ungava and the Melville Peninsulas between the mid 1970s and the mid 1980s, possess the unmistakable voice of authenticity. My one wish was that the book had been longer.

This book had it all...drama, suspense, physical injury, relationship woes, learning difficulties, teenage angst. I couldn’t put it down! Read it to see what I am talking about. I ordered it for my grandson.

Main character overcomes their obstacles. The book ends in a cliff hanger. I used the book for reading leisure.

I loved the book overall. The words seemed to jump of the pages. But it doesn't say whether or not they won the big game or not

My fifth grade son loves Tim Green books! This is how I keep him interested in reading.

It's a very good book i would recommend to football lovers and all the books too, the only thing is that I dislike how his father died at the end.

Great book

Good story. Great for high school age kids involved in sports or adults

We usually have to bug my son to read but not with Tim Green books.

This really is an excellent book. It's easy to read and follow because it's so organized and written in a style that is easy to comprehend. I haven't read through the whole book yet because I'm only working on the multifidus and piriformis muscles of my lumbosacral area of my back. That's where my main health issue lies. The chapter on relieving backaches helps you understand how and where in the body you may have gotten the back pain and how to treat it. There are a multivariate of conditions in the body that may lead to pain in this area that are considered. For years I practiced foot reflexology on friends, family, and myself, but I got away from it, for whatever reasons. But now I'm back and plan to stay with it. There are pressure points in the feet and hands that help to relieve back pain, and sometimes even eliminate it. But I won't get into that here because the book is the true guide with illustrations and directions that shows how to work the feet and hands to locate the pain in the body and then treat it with massage and other modalities. Diet can also lead to health problems that manifest themselves in the body.Something else that is excellent about the teaching methodologies in this chapter is the exercise regiment. Actually the exercises are a combination of stretches and postures and breathing. And some you can do sitting in a chair which is so helpful if you are having trouble bending over or getting up and down off the floor. I've been doing these stretches for seven days now and I haven't had one back ache. And usually I have shooting back pain in my right lower lumbar the minute my feet hit the floor when I wake up in the morning. I mean I couldn't get through a day without wearing my copper fit belt.Along with the gentle stretches and rubbing pressure points on my hands and feet, I also use two different roller bottles of essential oils along my spine. One bottle has Deep Blue EO and the other has a combo of Marjoram and Peppermint EO. And I've been going barefoot around the house. I think that has really helped me, too. It is a form of acupressure. I know for sure that all these modalities are working together to help me. I'm positive because I feel better. This book is more or less an introduction to the field of acupressure and reflexology and I'm really glad I bought it. It's already helped me a great deal and I know when I study the whole book very thoroughly, I'll reap the benefits even further. I don't expect to be a master on the subject. Nor do I plan do enter this field as a private business. But I do expect to take the responsibility to learn how to treat my body holistically and this book offers a good starter course.

The book is more or less like all other dummies books, informative easy to understand. I've only looked through it briefly but am happy with my purchase.Kudos to the seller the book is practically brand new, it was on time, the price was good. I would recommend this seller! Thank you

Packed with a lot of fluff and filler... there is no index for quickly finding relief for a certain ailment.... instead you have to skim from page to page to try and find what you are looking for. Because there is no index for relief, you can spend ages looking through the book and find out in the end that it isn't there.

All Dummies books are actually very well written. And relevant informations are presented thoroughly to readers who are new to a topic like Acupressure.Of course a book can only contain so much information.I've found author Michael Reed Gach the best on acupressure. He has one book like this For Dummies about general acupressure. Then he divided his publications into various groups like arthritis, back pains, energy and love making.I recommend his books after you've finished reading Acupressure for Dummies.

Excellent enlightment for the "I hurt all over person". The simple instructions bring relief, teaching where to apply pressure to a hurting area of ones own body. Thereby breaking up lactic acid that builds up around nerve juctions limiting blood flow carrying oxygen to whatever part of the body that is hurting. Trigger points of pressure are mostly similar to Acupunture. Not only does it provide rapid pain relief, the cost factor is often a barrier to those who have limited funds, or, no free time to get an appointment. Most professionals are booked which can delay treatment for immobilizing pain. Reflexology primarily used for the feet, has the same trigger points that will rlease pain all over the body's nerve pathways, however, the technique is used likewise as Acuppresure. Having a learned skilled knowledge of either technique is almost as good as a professional in ones pocket. BB

Although I've used accupressure and reflexology for years on family, friends and myself, I've still learned a lot from this very informative book. Every household should have and use this manual.

Have to say all the 'Dummies' books I have gotten, they have really helped me to understand the concept. This book helped me in an area that is way out of my comfort zone.

This book is again a very well written "Dummies" publication. In light of my aching body and the cost of health care, I am taking some forms of care into literally my own hands. This book is easy to understand and apply. I must say that having a person who is will to do the reflexology on your feet is very relaxing, but you can do it yourself

Animism: Respecting the Living World

Review

No recent author has emphasized it or dealt with its implications as thoroughly as Harvey.Choice (Choice)The strengths of this book are its fluid and engaging...writing; its openly committed stand on the central question, i.e., whether or not animals, plants, rivers, etc. are people, and its use of major ethnographic sources as evidence, together with conversations with indigenous peoples. In this book Harvey does exactly what he sets out to do: discuss animism in the modern world. He starts off by giving a brief overview of the history of the word, describing the "old" animism of Tylor and then explaining how it has changed and how the term is used in modern academia. The second section then includes four case studies, in which he looks at the animistic tendencies among certain cultures. Included here are the Ojibwe and their language, Maori Arts, Aboriginal Law and Land, and Eco-Pagan activism. In each section, Harvey does a through job of explaining what they believe, and gives plenty of sources for the reader to pursue. He also achieves what is perhaps the main point of the section: showing that animism isn't necessarily the same for everyone. The third section focuses on issues facing animist, and is divided into seven chapters. In these, Harvey discusses the history of the subject, as well as how it fits into an animist worldview both in modern times and in the past. The fourth and final section is on challenges that animists face. Here Harvey has provides three big challenges, and also provides some answers to them. At the end is a bibliography of all the work which Harvey references during text, making it easy for the reader to find an article or book on a particular topic of interest. While this is a great book and highly recommended for anyone to read, it must be noted that the book is very academic and might not be the best pick for someone more casually interested in the philosophy behind animism.

It was wonderful to find a book on the topic of Animism that didn't try to simply appropriate another culture's view on spirituality. Harvey's view of Animism strips out the mystical aspect of the practice, and simply lays the subject out on the table to examine plainly. Far too many people get caught up within the details of what Tribe X or Tribe Y believes in, and miss the point entirely: Animism is about forming healthy relationships with the world around you. Animism is not "a belief in spirits" -- though it is often accompanied by it -- but rather it is relating to the world around you, and the realization that you are only one person on the face of this planet that is filled with persons, both human and 'other-than-human'. Harvey spells this out plainly, and backs up his claims with decades and centuries of philosophy and science. This book is quite dense, however, and at times it can be difficult to slog through quotations from other works. All-in-all though, it has been a remarkable read.

This book can guide one through some of the solutions and cures for the ills in our present destructive culture.

perfecto

I am a professional anthropologist, with a specialization in anthropology of religion and the author of a forthcoming text on anthropology of religion from Routledge. Like the previous review, I was skeptical when I saw that Harvey included discussions of wiccans, feminists, and eco-spiritualists. However, the concern was ill-founded. Harvey has actually given us a very intelligent book on the latest research into "animism" or more properly the agent-centered view of nature and supernature. Truly, early commentators like Tylor considered animism to be an inferior type of religion, one based on false notions of intelligence or will in non-human beings (of course one could criticize all religions for false notions about non-human intelligence). However, as Harvey shows, not only is animism not inferior at all, but it is actually the essence of ALL religion--that there are non-human agents in the world, and that we humans interact socially with them. The contemporary sources that Harvey cites are a valuable library on their own. There are some shortcomings of the book. It does not include some of the best new work on agency in religion, like Pascal Boyer, Scott Atran, and Paul Bloom. The discussion of Hallowell and the Ojibwe is valuable, but the chapter on Australian Aboriginals is very deficient, relying on two main sources, one worthwhile (Deborah Bird Rose) and one not worthwhile (Michael Jackson). There is much literature he could and should have referenced, as I know, having done my fieldwork among the Warlpiri of Central Australia. Even the discussion of eco-spiritualism and such shows that these religions are as authentic as any "traditional" belief system, and in fact all belief systems are of course invented and constructed, and all are as affected by modernity as these new ones.Harvey's conclusion, that animism has been a concept invented by moderns to achieve modern intellectual goals is a good one, and he rightly points out that not all cultures share our Western dualistic approach to mind and body or to humans and "nature." It is a book very worth reading.

Like the Lost Ski Areas of the White Mountains, the Lost Ski Areas of Souther Vermont is a photographic journey into the defunct ski areas of in the snow belt. There are historic photos, recent photos, vintage trail maps, and more, connected together by text and captions.Unfortunately, the book is in black and white, so none of the photos or trail maps are displayed in their full glory. Nonetheless, it is a great collection.

This book will be awesome at our ski condo in VT! I love the history. Wish there were more small community hills these days.

I never knew about many of these resorts. I will make sure to look for them on my next ski trip.

Purchased for my husband. We grew up skiing at Hogback Mountain in Marlboro, Vermont. Brings back lots of great memories.

What a sweet little book. Snow Valley and Hogback and Dutch Hill really get the elegiac treatment. More of a collection of photos with captions, though.

A wonderful recollection of early Vermont skiing!

A nice review with plenty of pictures of bygone ski areas in southern Vermont, the birthplace of modern skiing. Nice companion to his first book. Looking forward to more.

This book is incredibly reactionary. I like the author's points and it made me think a lot differently about gender and colonization, but the way it's written is incredibly difficult to read. It feels like you're reading a long blog post (which, in the author's defense, they state that they pretty much are, and it was a conscious choice).

This is a really important contribution to the "Trans 101" conversation that you won't find anywhere else in print currently. The author makes many critical interventions into the implicit and overt whiteness of "Trans 101" as an educational, theoretical, social and political project. Although their consideration of trans masculine persons leaves a lot to be desired (they take great care with unpacking femme, femininity, and women, but barely unpack "man" or "masculinity" at all, leaving little room for feminist or transgressive masculinities of color), the book as a whole is one everyone should read who is invested in "trans" anything.

What an amazing and thought-provoking book. I would encourage anyone doing gender studies or cultural awareness studies to read it. Though I must warn folks - it is a hard read. In the introduction the author warns that their editing is not consistent and their content is not consistent either, and it is true. Binaohan pulls no punches either, and I believe that their decolonizing argument is *very* hard to read for anyone who is Caucasian, male, or both. That is not a reason not to read it, but I had to put the book down every 10 pages or so and come back later for editing or content reasons. Why is it still a 5 star then? Because the book is an important one for the shift in dialogue around gender issues, and I would argue is a must-read for folks passionate about trans/gender issues. Truly.

This book definitely put some things I had in my head into words. I do think it is worth reading next to a computer or digitally (as I did) to Google search terms you may be confused about or unfamiliar with. This is where discussions of gender need to start - outside of a white and privileged perspective.

While I do appreciate the author here, and their intent, I feel like a lot of this book is attacking Transgender 101 and downplaying the attempt that was actually made. I feel like some of the language in here is definitely way too harsh, especially when the author of Transgender 101 states in the introduction that it will not cover ALL, just the basics. This book did take me an exceptionally long time to read, because of the style that the author chose to write it in, as well as personally wanting to take their words to heart, and really resonate with their frustrations that Transgender 101 glossed over or ignored. While this book is over the line sometimes, and spends a lot of time criticizing, rather than building upon, I feel that you definitely need to read this book AFTER reading Transgender 101, to fully understand their positions with an open mind and heart.Definitely a good read, with some amazing insight. I wish this author and the author of Transgender 101, would've sat down together to make one amazing text!

Good stuff.

This book is amazing very informative and a must read for anyone and everyone. It's easy to understand and really fun to discuss. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I buy it and gift it to folx all the time cos it's so much wonderful!!

Great and helpful as a 101, tho I disagreed with a couple points.
