This book is incredibly reactionary. I like the author's points and it made me think a lot differently about gender and colonization, but the way it's written is incredibly difficult to read. It feels like you're reading a long blog post (which, in the author's defense, they state that they pretty much are, and it was a conscious choice).
This is a really important contribution to the "Trans 101" conversation that you won't find anywhere else in print currently. The author makes many critical interventions into the implicit and overt whiteness of "Trans 101" as an educational, theoretical, social and political project. Although their consideration of trans masculine persons leaves a lot to be desired (they take great care with unpacking femme, femininity, and women, but barely unpack "man" or "masculinity" at all, leaving little room for feminist or transgressive masculinities of color), the book as a whole is one everyone should read who is invested in "trans" anything.
What an amazing and thought-provoking book. I would encourage anyone doing gender studies or cultural awareness studies to read it. Though I must warn folks - it is a hard read. In the introduction the author warns that their editing is not consistent and their content is not consistent either, and it is true. Binaohan pulls no punches either, and I believe that their decolonizing argument is *very* hard to read for anyone who is Caucasian, male, or both. That is not a reason not to read it, but I had to put the book down every 10 pages or so and come back later for editing or content reasons. Why is it still a 5 star then? Because the book is an important one for the shift in dialogue around gender issues, and I would argue is a must-read for folks passionate about trans/gender issues. Truly.
This book definitely put some things I had in my head into words. I do think it is worth reading next to a computer or digitally (as I did) to Google search terms you may be confused about or unfamiliar with. This is where discussions of gender need to start - outside of a white and privileged perspective.
While I do appreciate the author here, and their intent, I feel like a lot of this book is attacking Transgender 101 and downplaying the attempt that was actually made. I feel like some of the language in here is definitely way too harsh, especially when the author of Transgender 101 states in the introduction that it will not cover ALL, just the basics. This book did take me an exceptionally long time to read, because of the style that the author chose to write it in, as well as personally wanting to take their words to heart, and really resonate with their frustrations that Transgender 101 glossed over or ignored. While this book is over the line sometimes, and spends a lot of time criticizing, rather than building upon, I feel that you definitely need to read this book AFTER reading Transgender 101, to fully understand their positions with an open mind and heart.Definitely a good read, with some amazing insight. I wish this author and the author of Transgender 101, would've sat down together to make one amazing text!
