About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.Abel Debritto, a former Fulbright scholar and current Marie Curie fellow, works in the digital humanities. He is the author of Charles Bukowski, King of the Underground, and the editor of the Bukowski collections On Writing, On Cats, and On Love.

Like so much of his poetry, it is a mixed bag. If you like him, you will like some of this work, maybe even love a few. Even if you like him, though, you might find a lot here that doesn’t live up to your expectations.He addresses this, several times, and seemed to be struggling to fit in to our idea of him, and maybe even his own idea of himself, after the readings stopped, after he found success, after the struggle was gone, what was left?You can see him reaching for it here, for sure. Does he reach it? I don’t think so. Few of the poems here survive in our idea of what Bukowski made.But as a writer, an artist, and a person true to his vision of himself, he continued. In a few years, he would give us “Last Night on Earth” so, it is good to watch the progress.

These crude and raw feelings are exactly what we need when we don’t find anything real around. It’s life as it is, from the perspective of a man that lived so much, and given in the most honest way he could.Sometimes I felt sad, sometimes I felt his joy, his sarcasm and his irony. I felt I lived a whole different life after reading these poems, and it was such an adventurous life, in its own, unique way.I guess this is something one can read after living the ups and downs of life, and I’m sure I’ll read and understand it differently 10 years from now.

Arrived a week early.The book itself will make you laugh, cry, cringe, restore your hope, but also increase your disdain for humanity. We all are the same and can learn a lot from one another. LISTEN before responding. Take others thoughts and feelings into consideration. Thanks for your lovely and unique insight Bukowski.

It’s no wonder that most of my favorite bands, films, authors, and art are influenced by CB. This collection of works contains some of his most off color and vivid imagery that most would be appalled by. Underneath it all is a shade of the human condition we all try to glam up or conceal entirely. I couldn’t contour his wit if I tried. You’re welcome for the make-up metaphors.

Real. I love how Buk can take one seemingly not so wonderful memory and hold it up for examination in the most modest of lights and show you the beauty of even our most s***ty humanistic qualities as something meaningful and pure.

I just started looking Charles Bukowski not too long ago.... I love his poetry, it makes no sense to me,but i don't mind, his poetry tells stories,and i can image myself be there with him and feel what he feels when i read them, i love it, definitely recommend reading his books, an old man with stories to tell. Filled with poems about life, love, loss, happiness, failure, and of course, drinking. Regardless of where you are in life, there will be at least one poem that will resonate with you. Bukowski was a talented writer and storyteller and had a way of making even mundane things interesting. I originally purchased the book because some of its contents were read on the movie Beautiful Creatures, and I was intrigued.

About the Author

Yayoi Kusama was born in 1929 to an upper-middle-class merchant family living in Matsumoto, about 100 miles northwest of Tokyo. Her childhood was difficult: her parents’ marriage was troubled , and Kusama began suffering from hallucinations and suicidal thoughts at an early age. She says that her art has been both a manifestation of her turbulent mental state, and a cathartic act. In the early 1950s, after briefly attending art school, Kusama moved to Tokyo, where she had several solo exhibitions of her paintings. In 1957, she moved to the U.S., settling in New York City. Here, she became actively involved in the New York avant-garde and Pop Art movements. In addition to her paintings and large soft sculptures, she organized "Happenings," often involving naked people painted with polka-dots and staged as anti-Vietnam War protests. She established the Kusama Fashion Company, which produced a line of outrageous clothing, which she often wore at events. Kusama moved back to Japan in 1973 and checked herself into a mental hospital, where she continues to live. She works from a nearby studio and produces paintings, sculptures, and installations -- still incorporating her polka-dot patterns into the pieces. She’s also published a book of poems and a number of novels. In 1968, she produced and starred in the film Kusama’s Self-Obliteration, which went on to win several interational awards. In 1991, Kusama had the featured role in the movie Tokyo Decadence, written and directed by Ryu Murakami; and in 1993, she collaborated with British musician Peter Gabriel on an installation in Yokohama. Another documentary entitled Kusama, Princess of Polka Dots is in progress.

Ordered this along with the Hirshhorn Museum catalog of Kusama's "Infinity Mirrors" show. Some repeats in the two, but I love this artist, so that's no problem for me. If you like Kusama's work, you'll like this book. The small (6" x 6") format has a nice intimacy.

Unlike other reviewers, I found the writing neither dry nor boring. Quite the contrary I find the writing fresh and interesting. I was on the fence about giving it 4 stars or 5, but opted for 5 with the caveat that, like so many celebrities today, she cannot help but give her opinions about how 21st Century decisions by politicians she quite apparently disapproves of are somehow correlated. That being said, the actual history is well presented and while I have seen quite a bit of it in other works, her synthesis is fresh and compelling. I read quite extensively and only rarely bother to write a review because we are each so different that my opinion probably is about as useful to you as yours is likely to be to me. Having said that, if you have an interest in the foundations of the modern world, you must understand World War I, and to understand how and why this event took place, I recommend this book most highly. There are those who bring up Tuchman's The Guns of August, and with good reason: it is absolutely the best book on the opening month and causation of World War I to date. This book by MacMillan is also very good, politics notwithstanding.

Margaret Macmillan explains in clear and and thoughtful prose why Europe went to war in 1914 after a century of peace and material and social progress (following the defeat of Napoleon.) The intricacies of Balkan politics and and the ambitions of innumerable ethnic groups in southeastern Europe produced an eruption of conflict and hatred that shocked and surprised the rest of Europe, already divided by alliances and and rivalries of their own. While most observers suspected that war would eventually come from French-German bitterness over the consequences of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, few suspected that the collapse of the Ottoman Empire would lead to minor conflicts in southeastern Europe that would drag all the Great Powers into a conflagration of unimaginable proportions. To understand the origins of the Great War and its consequences to this day, read this scholarly yet beautifully written study of a war of unimaginable tragedy.

As we approach the centennial anniversary of the outbreak of World War One we should pause to reflect on the terrible loss that conflict brought. In terms of western culture, 1914 was truly a watershed year that ended one way of life and introduced another. Margaret MacMillan followed up her epic study of the Versailles Treaty with this equally impressive work. She attempts to show how the war came about primarily because too many people either wanted war or did not do enough to prevent it from happening. The result is perhaps the most thorough analysis of the pre-1914 world available to the modern reader.MacMillan begins her book with an account of the major players (France, Germany, Russia, Britain, and Austria-Hungary) to illustrate their national hopes and dreams pitted against their fears and suspicions andn introduces the reader to the primary individuals who helped shape national policy. She then looks at the psychology of war and the peace efforts and compares them to the militarism that each nation experienced. She describes how the new concept of public opinion helped drive the leaders towards certain decisions. Next she looks at the series of run ups to the Great War's outbreak, Morocco, Bosnia, the Balkan Wars, and even the assassination of the Austrian archduke and his wife. None of these events meant that war was ultimiately inevitable. So long as there were at least some key players willing to negotiate and work through differences, war could be avoided.MacMillan concludes that war came about because the forces that sought it outnumbered and outmanourvered those who did not. But she also works to debunk myths that have evolved over the years. Germany and the Kaiser were not solely responsible for war in 1914. Germany had repeated backed down in the face of international pressure during the Morocco crises of 1905 and 1911. The Kaiser, while having the personality that modern day people would call a "jerk" (or worse), had a way of standing down at the last minute. Granted, he was fascinated with all things military, he was the inheritor of the Prussian military tradition, but he did not set out to bring war upon the world as he has often been blamed for doing. She also critiques the Anglo-French entente that developed after 1904. Britain and France were not a unified front as British leaders continually looked for ways to be non-committal in backing France on international affairs. She also looks at the relationship between France and Russia, and considers the challenges facing Austria-Hungary and the upstart Serbia. All of these have had myths develop around them and MacMillan works through the hyperbole to understand the root causes of national decisions. In fact, MacMillan ultimately blames no one and everyone for the war. The Great War, and she uses this term throughout the book, was the sum total of government's unwillingness to resort to diplomacy when the world needed eiplomacy the most.MacMillan is not only a fine historian but is also an excellent writer. Thoughout the book she interjects modern analogies to compare with her subject matter to help illustrate her points. One key such analogy appears near the end of the book when she states how John F. Kennedy employed diplomacy against the advice of his advisors in part because he had recently read Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August. Kennedy gave diplomacy a chance, the players of 1914 did not.MacMillan's writing style is crisp and lively. Truly, there is never a dull moment in this book. College history courses should utilize this book. The leaders of today should read this book. The average citizen who thinks that guns and war solve problems should read this book. There are lessons to be learned from MacMillan that need to be understood and appreciated. This book has all the makings of a Pulitzer Prize and as such cannot be discounted by anyone who is in the position of decision-making in international affairs. And on a large scale, that really means all of us, as public opinion is now counted for much by politicians and pollsters. Award-winning author, reviewer and essayist Leonard S. Marcus conducts and compiles the interviews. He speaks with artists like Hope Larsen, Sarah Varon, Danica Novgorodoff and Gene Luen Yang, perhaps the biggest name of the bunch. COMICS CONFIDENTIAL isn't an anthology --- it's more like a documentary in which Marcus discovers what makes each artist tick as well as what brought them to their craft.The informative nature of the work very much suits it for academia. It's more of a chronicling than a story. This is more of a resource than entertainment. The book would sit very well in a library, especially at an art school, or as required reading for a history of comics course. The anthropological approach to comics and comics creators is refreshing and continues to build on the trend of validating comics as a high art form. Marcus asks all of his subjects about their childhoods, how they got into comics, who or what their inspirations were and generally what their family life was like. This loose template helps to highlight and compare the differences and similarities in the origins and early lives of comic artists. It is wonderful to follow their early careers and note how unique everyone's journey into comics can be.The nice thing about COMICS CONFIDENTIAL is that all of the artists Marcus interviews have been making images for a long time, but most of them aren't entirely well-known to the average comic book reader. Names like James Sturm, Geoffrey Hayes, Catia Chien, Mark and Siena Cherson Siegel, Harry Bliss and Matt Phelan have all been around for a while but, like everyone else in the book, they fall on the often neglected alternative spectrum of comics.The best thing about the book is that each interview is followed by a short comic from that particular artist. A lot of the works tend to be autobiographical and rather introspective. Dave Roman narrates what it was like growing up in Long Island and the wonders of visiting New York City. Gene Luen Yang also illustrates his expectations of big city life and how the reality of college shattered his comic book-fueled illusions. Kazu Kibuishi relives a day spent in a bustling metropolis. All of the artists contribute short two page stories ranging from a bear leaving the city for the country and a woman finding a feral boy in the park to a block party in a small neighborhood.COMICS CONFIDENTIAL is a straightforward exploration of a selection of non-mainstream comic artists. It appeals to comics historians who are interested in documenting the medium. It will appeal to academics who enjoy a collection of artists works and statements and it also appeals to lovers of alternative and more introspective comics. Enjoyable interviews, this book is a good gift for a teenager interested in becoming a graphic novelist. Marcus's questions can seem mundane, like, "Do you have a work routine?" The answers, however, can be very interesting. Matt Phelan, for example, works in a backyard studio. Sara Varon tells us Monday and Wednesdays are her drawing days because of her part-time job. Varon is one of the artists I was not familiar with and I do hope she gets to quit her part-time job. On the other hand, young readers interested in a career in comics need to hear this stuff. I've read a number of online interviews with Gene Luen Yang and read his books. I learned more about him here.James Sturm's interview made me laugh out loud. The Geoffrey Hayes interview was interesting. He revealed that he was devoted to his brother Rory Hayes, also a comics creator, who died of a drug overdose. I've just read Hayes' new kid's comic book, 'Benny and Penny in How to Say Goodbye.' The Benny and Penny story is about death and loss. This interview is quite touching, having read that book.Included in Comics Confidential are specially commissioned original comics. Some of these are quite fine. The watercolor cityscape about dance by Mark and Siena Cherson Siegal is especially lovely. For educational purposes, I was pleased that all the artist's initial sketches were included in the book. Teachers of writing and/or illustration will find this book a most useful tool for introducing new artists and techniques to the classroom.

This book is an intriguing look at thirteen comics and has inspired me to consider my own future as a writer. Leonard Marcus interviews these diverse comics and delves into their varied childhoods and work routines. It was fun to learn about each writer’s different routine and read about how they started writing comics. I would have to say my favorite part was hearing about each writer’s work routine. It made me feel better about not having a strict routine and valuing the space for creative minds to work! The comics drawn for this book are also neat to see because each was drawn specifically for the book and all revolve around the same theme. Each of the thirteen writers has a unique take on the theme. Check out this book to see what they came up with! Kids should love this, lots of action and tension, the writer does a good job of ending this on a cliff hanger ready for volume 2,Art work is not the best, but I've seen much worse. You do need a colour screen to enjoy the art - of course!It is a short story and it's only a buck, better quality writing for less than most charge for hackneyed crap!Worth the read and worth the priceIt’s nice to read Minecraft books written by people who know English and can write at the same time. My 9 year old son has finished all of the books currently available in the Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior series. He decided to start the Diary of a Nether Kitten series while waiting for the next 8-bit book to be released in April. He said he really liked this book, and plans to read the other books in this series as well.

My son loved this book! He really likes cats and Minecraft. I'm so happy to find a book that combines his interests!

My son loved this book and loves most of what he has read by Cube Kid. He really enjoyed how the Nether Kitten was poised to be the hero of this book, fighting off the ender (creatures? oops - mom didn't listen well enough to his full summary). We are leaving this review in hopes that it will help the author finally release the second and third book that are promised in this set. My son is VERY eager to see what happens next! Please don't leave us hanging! :-)

Seven Spoons speaks to me on a couple levels, the first of which = the fact that it was published on my/the author's birthday! In the author's blog entry introducing this book, you can really feel how much time + love she poured into this book--it's a collection of all her favorite recipes over the years--hers, her family's and friends'--and she writes that she wanted it to be "as useful on special occasions as it was in the day-to-day." <3I love the way it's broken down to follow a day's worth of meals. There's a really nice variety of all sorts of different foods, so there's something for everyone in here--assuming that you like minimally processed, whole foods. (Translation: If you are a die-hard Twinkie fan and that's all you'll ever consume, you probably do not want this book.) She tries to buy food as locally as possible, cooks seasonally, and is "less about innovation and more about getting supper on the table."Tara includes an aside on how to best use Seven Spoons, stating that she hopes "to share the experience of cooking with you as best I can through the page." The book reads almost as if you're conversing with her, and there are some recipes where she'll leave the ingredients or instructions to your interpretation (because all our tastes are different). She includes a section on stocking your pantry, with a discussion on dairy & alternatives, oils, vinegars, salt/spices/herbs/condiments, sweeteners, grains/beans/lentils, flours, and nuts + seeds.Although I really enjoyed this cookbook, I would not recommend it to anyone just starting out in cooking. I should also mention that since I live in a place that's fairly limited in terms of food diversity, getting a number of the ingredients that these recipes call for would be difficult. Her recipes are more labor- and time-intensive than I'm used to, since I still consider myself a fledgeling cook and tend to gravitate toward quick + simple recipes that won't break the bank.Since I'm not a hardcore-enough foodie, I haven't heard of a lot of the foods mentioned/made in Seven Spoons. These recipes would not be at all out of place at a fancy-schmancy restaurant, and I'd love to be able to recreate em' at home, but am somewhat doubtful of my skill level. I plan to start with the simpler ones and work my way up!That being said, the food photography in this book is absolutely gorgeous, and left me wishing that there was more of it--you won't find a photo for every recipe in the book, and there is more text than I'm typically used to seeing in a cookbook, but since I tend to be equally as verbose, I didn't mind at all, and look forward to sitting down with this one day to really delve into it.Note: I received from Blogging For Books in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are mine and mine alone.

These are not ingredients that most people will have on hand, and if you need something quick and easy, you won't find this cookbook useful. However, there are some really great and different recipes in here that given the time, are probably amazing. I do love how the author writes in such a personal and personable way. I was hoping for something a little more useful for everyday. The pictures are gorgeous.

Perfect for me. I have diabetes make up most of my own recipe or tweak one's I find. There is nothing in here I wouldn't make for myself and or guest. These recipes are easy and most other the ingredients are in my pantry. I was drawn to this book because of the turmeric elixir and and golden honey I saw on her blog, which I also recomend. I am delighted I purchased it.

Great cookbook. So far I've made the chocolate chip cookies (excellent) and the soused tomatoes. I wish, however, that the pages were a waxed paper instead of a matte paper so they were slightly cleanable and I wish there were a few more pictures.

Some of my bloggers kept mentioning this book, so I bought it. Made the Blueberry snacking cake, and had to make it again it was so good. Love her food sensibilities, style, and look forward to doing more exploration and experimenting with her recipes.

Beautifully written book. Tara's writing style is like having a friend write for you. She has lovely anecdores along with her recipes which are a great mix of flavours and everything from healthy and nourishing to treat food. There are so many wonderful recipes I want to try and she makes those recipes easy to follow. It's such a warm and wonderful book and her heart and soul are definitely in every page! My only drawback was that a few recipes didn't have photos but you can't have it all I guess.

This is a fascinating subject. Anyone who ventures into scientific research should be aware that, no matter how brilliant an idea is, there is always the danger that some or all of it may be totally wrong. I especially found the section about Fred Hoyle interesting. Livio states that Hoyle " was not religious" and therefore felt that the Steady State theory was the only one that allowed the necessary time for evolution to produce life and eventually intelligence. I wonder if Livio is familiar with a book Hoyle wrote in 1983 called "The Intelligent Universe"? In this book, he proposes that there is an intelligence beyond Earth that controls evolution of life throughout the Universe, and states that he now believes that this superior intelligence is responsible for our own intelligence. In a sense, he no longer considers himself an atheist. He rejects Darwinism ( providing convincing mathematical reasoning to show why natural selection is impossible) and believes that we will never contact extraterrestrial life forms, because the Universe is specifically designed to prevent this possibility. He argues that life comes from organic molecules found in nebulae. He still insists that Steady State is correct, however, and presents arguments to support it. One can appreciate the thinking of the great scientific minds and admire their courage in proposing theories that contradict established thought. It is inevitable that some of these bold ideas turn out to contain blunders, as they are working at the frontiers of knowledge where there are many unknowns.The book gives credit to the scientists for the many brilliant contributions they made, while pointing out that they were still fallible, like all of us.

Excellent book that explains the science clearly for a non-science audience. The stories are interesting and well argued as to why the blunders are considered "brilliant". A fun read. I found it useful to have others read the book that are exposed to (and believe) misrepresentations of the concepts described in the book.

This book is written at a very satisfying level. It falls between the pop culture level of writing such as Malcolm Gladwell's and the senior year university textbook. Not to say those writings aren't important but this book falls nicely between--advanced concepts explained in enough detail that will call for focused attention from an adult mind. You will need to concentrate and even then you may miss a point or two. But if you have any scientific curiosity you will find yourself stimulated and with a deeper understanding of the universe. You'll want to read it again later.

Mr. Livio has written very readable books on math and science in the past; however, this book on "colossal mistakes by great scientists that changed our understanding of the universe" may be the best of what he's written so far. There is a joy and verve in his writing here that is beyond what he's done before. This makes for a book that is not only interesting but also a pleasure to read.Granted, he's chosen a particularly good topic: mistakes made by huge names in science--Darwin, Kelvin, Pauling, Hoyle, and Einstein. He handles it in an atypical way, however. Instead of using their well-known "blunders" to find a backdoor into criticism of these men as others have done in the past, Mr. Livio shows how the mistakes of great scientists often make perfect sense. In addition, he shows how these mistakes often open the door for others to make important breakthroughs.Consider Kelvin, often the poster child in scientific circles for someone who achieves much in his youth but then becomes hardened into his positions in old age even in the face of overwhelming evidence. Kelvin believed that the age of the earth could be no more than a few million years despite the fact that geological and evolutionary data during his lifetime indicated that the earth had to be much, much older. But what people often fail to understand about Kelvin is that he based his belief on thermodynamic calculations, calculations on which he was the acknowledged expert. More subtly, those people who threw the evidence of geology and biology and newly discovered radioactivity in his face often did not understand that even if their evidence spoke about the age of the earth, no known mechanism could account for the age of the sun which Kelvin had also calculated to be only a few millions years. In fact, it would be many decades before nuclear fusion would be understood well enough to determine that the age of the sun could also be billions of years and synch up with the assumed age of the earth. Kelvin based his mistake on calculable physics and, mistake though it may have been and intransigent as he certainly was, it encouraged other scientists to do significant work to refute him.Livio makes similar work of Darwin's understanding of inheritable traits, Pauling's work on the structure of DNA, Hoyle's refutation of the Big Bang, and Einstein's cosmological constant. He structures his book well, delivering a chapter on outlining the mistake (what it was and how a great mind could make such a mistake) and then following with a chapter that examines the impact of the mistake on the development of science.Livio also deserves credit for looking into primary sources to examine aspects of controversy about these so-called mistakes. In particular, he has a great section on the primacy debate on what is now known as Hubble's Law between Edwin Hubble and Georges Lemaitre. In addition, he quite convincingly argues that Einstein never called the cosmological constant his "greatest blunder". In fact, that is a story most of us know third-hand through a not-quite-reliable source.Because of its triumphs, many people look upon science as some kind of edifice of truth. Those involved in science, however, know that the power of science comes from its ability to advance by correcting mistakes and refining understanding. Because of that, the history of science is riddled with blind alleys and big blunders. Those things happen to be just as important to the development of science as what is currently accepted as accurate. Mr. Livio has done an excellent job of demonstrating this by pointing out the mistakes made by some of the greats. This is a book anyone interested in the history of science should read.

Livio shows the importance of collaboration of others in solving scientific inquiries, and how ego may get into the way of great discoveries through ignorance of other outside observations as it did with Kelvin, Houle and Pauling, or in the case of Einstein humility in believing his math actually explains many cosmological phenomena, or in the case of Darwin, where ignorance was bliss in his theory of evolution. He does a good job of explaining into laymen's terms the thought processes of each proposed hypothesis of these five brilliant scientists although the physics that explains Houle's and Einstein's blunders can become difficult to follow if one lacks a background in physics. As a science teacher I found it to be a good resource in helping understand many of the accepted discoveries of how the earth and the universe were formed and aged.
