THIS BOOK IS SIMPLY FABULOUS. I utterly loved reading this book. It is truly profound in its wisdom of the human psyche. You could almost use this as a reference book in a psychology class. Lewis was undoubtedly gifted with a deep wisdom not granted to the rest of us. Frankly, moments of it are a bit difficult to read because you have to constantly invert what the demon is saying to pull away the positive lesson; that said, this book is VERY worth reading for ANY Christian. Lewis was an Anglican but he exposes universal Christian / Human truths here. One might argue that his theology (at least in this work) is nearly Catholic; but the simple fact of the matter is all Christians recognize that Angels and Demons are real and they are waging a spiritual battle around us and we are caught in the crossfire. Lewis exposes the many traps that we, as sinners, fall into and how our minds are often pigeonholed which merely compounds our problems. Lewis also exposes more than once how EVEN GOOD THINGS can be twisted and used for evil purposes if we aren't careful. As I said, every Christian (and frankly, non-Christians as well) should read this book.I cannot recommend this specific version of the letters highly enough. This annotated edition is very well made. The annotations are SUPERB. The author clearly knew Lewis's works in and out and was erudite in his own right. Frequent quotes in the margins from Lewis's other writings bring a wonderful richness not experienced if one only reads the text by itself. There are also helpful notes dealing with colloquialisms of mid-century British English which might be lost on American readers. I took quite a lot away from this book; the margins have sparked a strong desire in me to read his other works. I have half a mind to gift copies to people I know---but this specific version because of the notes. This is a book I will cherish the rest of my life and, in all likelihood, re-read once a year or so. In terms of the physical book itself, it is very well made with fine paper, nice margins, and a beautiful dust jacket. You get your money's worth.(PS- this copy DOES include Screwtape's Toast (epilogue to the letters) at the end, published after the initial letters themselves.)
Our Small Faith community group started to study the Screwtape Letters, but had so many questions about the language, and CS Lewis in particular. We found an annotated version on line as an ebook but it was difficult to go back and forth from the annotation number to the annotation itself.I found this new annotated copy which is much more comprehensive than the last. The annotations are on the same page as the corresponding number. They give so much more insight into the life of CS Lewis when he wrote the book and explain British phrases that were used in the 40's but have no meaning to someone now. I would recommend it for anyone interested in studying this book.
I've loved and been blessed by the Screwtape letters for many years, and have marveled at the wisdom and insight that God has given C.S. Lewis into the hearts and minds of people; of the struggles that EVERY human faces; and of the intricacies, craftiness, and diligence of Satan and his many minions. I've learned a lot about myself and how better to overcome the evil one and his ploys through Jesus, our Christ and Lord.And now, I am reading this wonderful annotated version replete with goodies. I love reading about Lewis' mental and physical process in writing this book; about the social and political goings-on that shaped his thinking, emotions, and writing; and about all the tidbits throughout the book that embellish and provide insight into these timeless letters.Paul McCuster has done an outstanding job annotating this book. It is a must read for all faiths, as well as all athiests and agnostics. Really. Give it a try.
Just received my copy and VERY impressed. Beautiful book. I know some have said the annotaions were distracting, but honestly, they are in small red print and the actual story is in large (which is very appreciated) bolder black print. Therefore, you can easily read the story through without looking at the side notes. Afterward, read the side notes (annotations). So there you go.
I wanted an annotated edition of this because -- well, I just did, and this one is beautiful. It's a nice copy and pretty and also easy to read. The annotation doesn't interrupt the flow at all, but it's clear. It is also not about the writings of CS Lewis on the whole, just about these letters, which is great for me. Others may want a more in-depth comparison that goes deep into all of the writings. This is not that book, but the Letters themselves are great to read again and again, and this copy is a beauty. It may be my favorite recent-ish purchase.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Though short, there is a ton of content in every sentence. Add the era that it was written, and it's not a book to be read while distracted or as you're falling asleep. Interesting perspective.
I'm one of those folks who don't enjoy reading fiction without lessons in there somewhere. One of our elderly ministers has been promoting the literature of C.S. Lewis for years. I bought this book thinking it would be very entertaining. It is, but in such an introspective way. A friend asked if it were an "easy read". Absolutely not! How anyone could have ever gotten so deeply into the minds of those of us who call ourselves Christians, I do not know. Lewis has certainly opened my eyes to my own vulnerability to the works of the Devil. I shudder to think what God would think were He to look into my eyes as the window to my soul!
