The author of The Millionaire Mind and The Millionaire Next Door has certainly stumbled onto a great idea: He's become rich by selling his books, written in pseudo-scientific jargon, how rich people live and think based essentially on their self-reported answers to surveys. Actually, that description is a little simplistic, but not far off. I've read both books and they are somewhat interesting for their insight (most multi-millionaires are very, very different from the celebrity trash we all see on t.v.). However, anyone with a very basic knowledge of statistics and a practical understanding of basic psychology or human nature will have a problem with some of the conclusions that the author alludes to. Such as: People who have their shoes repaired rather than throwing them away, people who have strong religious backgrounds, and people who avoid do-it-yourself home-improvement are more likely to become millionaires. The author frequently makes leaps to conclusions without really analyzing the causal connection. He also relies too heavily on self-reported answers to his surveys. Sure, the deca-millionaire is going to tell you "hard work", "honesty", and "charity" are important to "being successful." But he's not going to necessarily advertise that "off-shore tax evasion", "sticking it to the working class" and "having blue-blood parents" doesn't hurt the balance sheets either. It sometimes seems like the author was born yesterday. One last complaint: The books could be reduced to around 50 pages if all the hokey anecdotes were edited out. They don't add much and almost insult the intelligence of the reader ("To tell you how important it is to save money, let me tell you about Mr. Moneybags and how he saved money and thus accumulated money."). Overall, to be clear, these books are worth reading, but I'd borrow them from a friend (or library) and save your money.

This book was not at all what I was expecting, but contains some good advice that many would benefit from. For some background, my wife and I are relatively young and have career jobs. I bought this book for information on making the most of any extra income, learning more about investing strategies, options for generating passive income, and improving my personal finances. I did learn a few things, but not on these topics (maybe a bit on the last point). The book primarily focuses on interesting finds and anecdotes from the authors' years of research on millionaires in America.The book is divided into eight chapters:1. Meet the Millionaire Next Door2. Frugal Frugal Frugal3. Time, Energy, and Money4. You Aren't What You Drive5. Economic Outpatient Care6. Affirmative Action, Family Style7. Find Your Niche8. Jobs: Millionaire vs. HeirsThe author essentially splits everyone into two categories: Underaccumulators of Wealth (UAWs) and Prodigious Accumulators of Wealth (PAWs). UAWs have a low net worth relative to income, and the opposite for PAWs and uses these terms throughout the book.His primary argument is that PAWs get to be wealthy by living well below their means - these are people who do not look like millionaires, they live in modest neighborhoods, drive domestic sedans, wear a Timex, and usually have a blue-collar job that does not come with an expensive lifestyle associated and as a result can accumulate a sizeable nest egg. On the other hand, UAWs are typically well-educated professionals with high paying and high profile jobs (doctors, attorneys), but due to societal pressures associated with their social standing are forced to squander all their money living in luxury neighborhoods, driving German cars, and sending their kids to private schools. Their expensive lifestyle means that they spend most of their income and as a result have a low net worth, despite outward appearances.I agree that this is good advice for just about anyone: live below your means and prioritize financial security over social standing. Growing up in a single-income family living in a modest middle class neighborhood, I'm quite used to the live-below-your-means philosophy and I think it gave me at least some sense of good financial discipline. If my parents are any indication, it works great.Where the authors really lost my interest is that the rest of the book is chock full of anecdotes and some rather uninformative statistics to drive a few other points home. While some of these are good points and undoubtedly useful, they always seem to come with caveats or don't draw any real conclusion, which I found frustrating. Most of the points could have been made succinctly in about 1/10 the amount of page space the authors dedicate to them. These include:- Most millionaires in America are self employed business owners, because they run their personal finances like their business finances. However, going into business for yourself is very risky so we don't really recommend that as a viable way to get rich.- Very few millionaires have ever spent much money on a nice suit, pair of shoes, or luxury watch. They usually live in modest neighborhoods or rural areas where the cost of living and social pressures of consumerism are lower.- First generation millionaires (often immigrants) tend to be succeeded by children with financial struggles, since the parent's desire to "give them a better life" pushes them into careers where they become UAWs, and their upbringing in our consumerist culture impedes their ability to live frugally. But even if it turns them into UAWs, encourage them to go to college and aspire to a while-collar professional job.- Parents giving money to their children develops and reinforces poor financial habits. This money is almost always immediately spent, and these children generally have no savings since they are looking to their parents as their safety net and counting on an inheritance. Doing things like buying children a house in an upscale neighborhood or sending grandkids to a private school actually makes the children worse off, since they have to spend more to maintain the associated lifestyle.- The authors spend an inordinate amount of time and space comparing different careers, which I found next to useless since I'm very happy with my chosen career (Engineer) and have no intention of changing. They continually deride pretty much every professional job you can think of, and simultaneously praises how great working for yourself or owning a business is while going on about how difficult and risky it is to actually own a successful business. The author does not recommend changing careers, but again, this is more of a discussion of what their research has shown than any sort of "how to" advice.- Car buyers fall into four categories: whether you buy new or used, and whether you buy from the same place or shop around. The authors devote an entire chapter to this while only coming to the following conclusions: no method of buying a car is the clear winner, but if you own a business you may benefit from your connections with the owners of car dealerships; and most millionaires drive unassuming domestic (and to a lesser extent, Japanese) cars purchased new or lightly used.A final note - curiously, I found no mention of anything real-estate related, which to me is highly unusual in any sort of book about building wealth. The only investment advice found here is in the final chapter and could be summarized as "invest in what you know." That is, if you work in a certain sector, your knowledge of the industry will help you make good investment decisions. Not sure how I feel about this one. For example: not working in technology doesn't mean blue-chip tech stocks are a bad investment. Take it with a grain of salt.One last complaint: most of the financial figures are presented in mid-1990s dollars. I found it frustrating to have to mentally convert to today's dollars to get a relative sense. The authors took the time to update the preface in 2010, it would have been nice to see a revision to the figures quoted throughout the book. (For reference, one 1996 dollar is worth about 1.6 dollars in 2017).In summary, I was surprised about the amount of praise heaped on this book. I would hardly categorize it as a self-help book, it's more a retrospective on the authors' research and a collection of anecdotes and interesting conclusions about the countless Americans leading unglamorous lives while accumulating appreciable amounts of wealth. It's a quick read and I made it through the whole book on a 5-hour flight with time to spare. I would only recommend this book as an interesting overview of some good financial habits, or as an eye-opener for those with luxurious financial tendencies who struggle to save money despite their income level. However, for those who have already developed some discipline and are looking for detailed strategies and advice on personal finance and building wealth via investments and generating passive income, look elsewhere.

This is such an inspiring read because it shows almost anyone can become a millionaire if you live below your means and invest well. I love that the majority of millionaires are people you'd never suspect because they don't live flashy lives in big houses with high-status toys abounding. If you make $200,000 a year, but spend $220,000, you're in trouble. But if you make $50,000 a year and live on $35,000, investing the rest, over time you're going to be in great shape.I grew up in a super-affluent suburb. My friends' lived in big houses and mansions with luxury cars and country club memberships. We lived in one of the smallest houses in the suburb. My mom was so frugal. I thought it was such a drag!! But when she died (too young), she'd saved enough so that my dad, who lived another 30-some years, was comfortable in retirement. I wonder now if any of my high school friends' parents were actually living on the edge in trying to keep up with the Joneses.Years ago, I used to charge like crazy. Now I save like crazy, just like my mom.

hi i received this bundle in 2 days with free shipping, and the cost is much cheaper than in college bookstore, my college is selling it for $170.00 and i saved a lot on amazon, i am making others life easier by giving this review. it contains everything that you need, a registration code, an essel to hold your book, a small manual to accompany which i feel not necessary, and the main book of document processing.. its all in one big box.. though amazon dont give any such description and so its difficult to understand what you are ordering. i feel the other students before ordering just order a book and you can buy the code online on the gdp site.. well it both makes the same cost.. amazon saved my money..thank you so much amazon

I was very skeptical about buying this because I could not get a clear answer as to if it came with an access code and if it even worked if it did come with one. It came in a box with the cover looking like the picture. It contained a hard cover spiral text book, a student word manual, a cardboard easel and the registration card with access code (which worked). I would recommend to buy if your looking for a cheaper buy than the college bookstore.

Ordered this because it included access code per item description. But when the book came, access code did not work. On calling the publisher, they informed the code has already been used. I had to buy access code separately paying for a full book

It came with the GDP activation code and all the books I needed for my college course.

This is a great item for class. It has the large teaching book with a smaller "reference" book (gives examples of proper document formatting & abbreviations). My only complaint is the "easel" that is included: it's cardboard, had a 1/2" base/"edge" to rest a 3" book! I ended up buying a different easel (metal, with a larger base) just to hold the book in place because the cardboard one was not big enough for the book.

I'm very pleased with this purchase. I wasn't sure if the kit had the access code, so I chatted with an Amazon representative who checked on it for me and said that it did. This was a great deal because Amazon allowed me to pay for the item over a 6-month period with no interest.

This is the worst. I ordered this book in new status and it was not new. New is meaning ALL things are included. Such as access key and so on. So now this has put me behind as far as finding the correct material for my class which starts Monday and no one has the book. Thank you very much.

Works just what I needed it for, a college textbook. My complaints with it is the easel is completely worthless, some of the pages are printed off-center (luckily I can still at least read what I need to), and there are little pieces of paper that come off every time i turn a page. I think they didn't do a good job when they cut out the holes for the spiral binding.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***You have to read more than halfway into the story until they actually get married. Up until then, it’s a big ol’ dance between the two of them. After that, it’s more dancing and then you toss in a crazy ex-husband, a pregnancy that really doesn’t have much relevance to the story IMO and some mystery/love story that tries to fill in the rest of the plot. The story itself jumps blocks of time per chapter as it sees fit, which means that the author doesn’t have to really build any part of the plot in too much detail. All in all, a disappointment and $0.99 I wasted.

Sadly I did not finish this one, I was all into it , but then Emma got on my last good nerve with her petty acts. OMG, I mean I understand he hurt you BUT dang woman grow up , you are not in high school still. And it wasn't like he bed you and left, he said goodby and you know it was coming , it just happen early they you thought. SO GROW UP. I stop reading it and gave up on it. This book was such a delight to read! The two main characters had great chemistry and boy oh boy was it exciting! There's twists and turns throughout the book that kept me on my toes. If your looking for a contemporary romance that has a little drama, emotion, laughter and some steam then you'll want to read this book!Final Rating: 5 Stars

This book was good but it was really slow moving for me. There were just too many unnecessary details and that made it extra long. Not that it took so much from the story, but I still pushed through it and enjoyed it all the same.

What a sweet story about Grant and Emma. The story starts when Grant and Emma were in high school . Emma is working with Grant's younger brother who is the same age as Emma. They are working on artwork and staging for a play at the high school. Grant comes in the room and Emma is smitten.A couple of years later Grant comes back in town from college break and stops to get ice cream where Emma is working and he strikes up a conversation with her. He continues to come and see her daily when he finally asks her out.They begin dating and a relationship starts. When summer is done Grant leaves Emma to go back to school and Emma decides it was never meant to be and she goes on to college and life.Years pass and following a hard divorce Emma moves back home to become a high school teacher. She meets up with Grant again and she tries to avoid him because he hurt her with the way he left years before.They both get involved with a special cause at the school and get closer. Can they make it work this time around and come out better for it?Loved this story and all of the trials they had to work through. Also loved the other characters in the story. Thank you R.S. Lively for such a wonderful story.

What would our lives be like without alcohol and ice cream? To quote Homer Simpson, " Here's to alcohol: the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems." Lol. These lady writers know what they're writing about. Can you be so drunk you don't remember getting married? Can feelings of inadequacy and insecurity rear their ugly heads and have you doubt your relationship? Yes, to all of the above. The R.S. Lively ladies are imaginative and intelligent in their story telling. Do yourself a favor and read this book, it's wonderful.

I was a bit confused at the beginning, but as the story developed, it was such a wonderful story to follow. Grant and Emma were so lucky to have their dreams fulfilled, even when it seemed destined for a fall. Thank you so much for this terrific book!

This is my first read from RS and I enjoyed the chemistry between Grant and Emma. Without putting spoiler alerts in my review, there were laughs and heartache, and a slow burn that happens between them. There are multiple things happening through the story, but overall, this is a great read. I originally received an ARC of this book but liked it so much that I ended up buying it.

I wish this book had more information on the land and trails managed by the forest service, which is adjacent and seamless with the national park itself.

All these books really help me pick my next hike. Great information.

This book is an awesome resource for planning your hikes in the North Cascades. There are not only detailed descriptions of the trails, but some interesting facts about the area as well. I would have liked an overall map that shows what the different hikes are they've described, and the loops you can do for backpacking, but overall found this book a great tool.

Very complete trail descriptions, but ratings might be a little deceiving. The trails rated moderate can be pretty rough in parts. Also, it should mention that the Marblemount Ranger Station does not issue permits for the whole park. The Glacier Ranger Station issues permits for Copper Ridge.

As a beginner to organic lawn care, I appreciated the easy to understand directions and information contained in this book, and it's good to have a reference on hand containing practical information that's easily put into practice. After reading Paul Tukey's book, I didn't feel overwhelmed, and felt I could easily incorporate his suggestions. He covers everything from different grasses to compost tea, lawn drainage problems to sharpening mower blades. I especially liked the chapter on "Getting Your Lawn Off Drugs", including the Lawn Care Calendar that details organic lawn maintenance according to regions.

I started my own Organic lawn care company and this book is full of great information. I reference it all the time and appreciate Paul's easy to understand approach to explaining organic lawn care practices. There have been a lot of advances in Organic herbicides and fertilizers since this book was written so I had to do some additional research in those areas but outside of that it has all the info you need.

Other reviews have detailed the contents of this book, so I won't rehash them. Bottom line, this is an EXCELLENT resource for anyone looking to learn more about taking care of their lawn.If you are interested in taking care of your lawn yourself (i.e. no lawn care company), this Manual has all of the information that you need to fully understand how to grow a lush, beautiful lawn... without the use of chemicals.My favorite part is that it includes a monthly maintenance calendar so I can remember what I am supposed to be doing each month of the year.

I have to admit, I first looked into organic lawn care for not-so-noble reasons. I have a pool in my backyard, which means that using any nitrogen-rich fertilizer back there risks getting nitrates in the pool water, which is a big no-no for pool owners. I hoped that organic lawn care could provide me with a way to care for my backyard without endangering the pool water. That's not to say that I didn't care about the environment; it just wasn't my first priority.However, in reading this book, I've become downright enthusiastic about, not just helping the environment, but having a great yard *while* helping the environment. As other reviewers noted, the author does not ask us to settle for inferior lawns in order to help the environment. He is passionate about having a great lawn -- and doing it the right way.There are essentially two ways to get great looking lawns: treat it with chemicals, or follow the organic route described in this book. They can both produce great looking lawns, but there is a difference. I liken the comparison to making a person look better through either plastic surgery or exercise. Plastic surgery is fast and can have some incredible results, though it does nothing to improve the actual health of the person. Whereas exercising can probably get to the same end, though with a bit more effort, especially at the beginning. However, even though the results may look similar, underneath the person who has been exercising is stronger, fitter, and more able to cope with the physical stresses of life. Similarly, with a bit more effort (at least, at the beginning), an organically cared-for lawn can look great and be healthier and stronger than a chemically cared-for lawn.I'm ditching the remainder of my Scott's Four-step weed-and-feed lawn care process and embarking on *really* caring for my lawn. Thank you Paul Tukey for opening my eyes!PS - as an added bonus, I *can* care for my lawn organically without endangering my pool water.

I read other reviews before purchasing this book. I thought it was the perfect blend of technical information if you wanted it and practical explanation for the doing. It is well laid out so that once you've read through it, you can easily find the reference material you need. I think it's the perfect start for going organic. You can get as crazy as you want or take it a step at a time.

I am already a Paul Tukey fan, as he is a local celebrity here in Maine. I am considering buying a riding mower and dropping an expensive lawn care service. This book is helping me prepare for that transition. The writing style and layout in the book is excellent. I am choosing to read through first, but with the excellent index, it also makes a great reference book. Moderately priced (especially since I used my Discover points).

One of the best , most informative gardening books I have ever read. An easy read. Chock full of practical information that can be readily applied. Great reference sources. A must read if you are interested in organic lawn maintenance and gardening.
