The book is full of typos and other sloppy errors. After a couple months of use the binding on my hardcover copy has started falling apart. The content seems rushed and the physical book itself feels cheap.This book wouldn't be so bad if it had been properly reviewed and printed with quality materials.

I bought the book a few months ago as textbook for my semester class in high performance computing. After reading the first 3 chapters I realized that this book is a waste. The examples are only solved partially, a lot of jargons (they should have put the terminology in separate table, maybe).I was hoping, by reading the book I'd learn something essential and got the basic philosophy of high-performance computing/parallel processing. Instead, I got more confused than before reading it! (I used to be real-time software programmer, so the field is not totally new to me). The authors tried to put everything in this small 633-pages book.Even my professor said it is useless to read the book and referred us to other research papers [Robertazzi's papers], and yes, these IEEE/ACM papers are much clearly understood! I also found that some websites much better explaining the concept. Another book is also I guess better: "Fundamentals of Parallel Processing" by Harry F. Jordan and Gita Alaghband.Don't waste your money on this book.

This is one of the most classic books in the area. Algorithms are very well explained, however I think that performance analysis is not well covered.

Wonderful condition, as described.

I like this book very much. I have used it for a course I am about to finish.It provides a solid foundation for anyone interested in parallel computing on distributed memory architectures. Although there is some material on shared memory machines, this material is fairly limited which might be something the authors should change for a 3rd edition given the times we're living in.The complaint I would raise is that the book doesn't always feel "clean". It's hard to give a concrete example but sometimes you really have to spend some time to understand where a communication time complexity comes from even though the author's refer to a table of communication time complexities. Why? Because the table is based on that the underlying architecture is a hypercube which isn't really made explicit anywhere (?).

I agree with the other reviewers who have said that this book is sloppy. There are just far too many mistakes for a 2nd edition book; very discouraging in an Addison-Wesley print.The content is OK, and fairly thorough, but as another reviewer noted, there's considerable handwaving going on in some of the explanations.Bottom line: a cleaned-up 3rd edition could be a very good textbook. Too bad I'm stuck with the 2nd edition :(

If I had to sum up this book in one sentence, it would be, “It’s easier to be brave when you’re not alone." Today I am Carey touched me more deeply than most books I have read lately. Shoemaker makes his characters become real as he writes about them. I learned several things from this book. But the quote above, from one of his characters, made me think and made me understand life just a little more clearly. I highly recommend Today I Am Carey. I look forward to the next book from Shoemaker.

This book was recommended to me by a friend who is a geriatrics nurse. It's science fiction in a way (in that it involves AI applications in the future) but also deals with the realities of dementia, elder caretaking, and other current realities that at times caused me to cry. It's hard to review without spoilers, but I have taken it to all the clubs and organizations to which I belong and recommended it to other people directly. I do not ordinarily go around flogging books.

I am not typically a science fiction fan but Today I Am Carey is not typical science fiction. A fast read that was difficult to put down, the author made me care about the main character, an android, and appealed to me on a human level by taking the reader through the journey of life and death. Although the story clearly takes place in the future, the elements are very applicable and relevant to the present. I hope that I will be reading more about Carey in future books.

This is a quiet, beautiful SF novel that gets the essence of love exactly right. While it may frustrate the reader who is more action-oriented, I was hooked from the start by the title character and the well-drawn family who welcomes him/her into their home and their lives. If you're looking for slice-of-life sci fi written with competence and, even more importantly, humanity, this is the book for you!

I spent two years visiting podiatrists trying to get pain relief from my plantar's fasciitis. The first one gave me steroid shots in the tendons - apart from being THE most painful shot I've ever had - it did relieve the pain AMAZINGLY well, but it eventually came back. Bought the $500 inserts (not covered by insurance) and wore nothing but tennis shoes. Once the shot wore off I was back at square one. Tried another podiatrist who - irrespective of his being an ass - did nothing for me. I asked for shoe/exercise recommendations and he just told me that if anything hurts, I'm doing more damage. So on chance, I stumbled on this book in the library and read it. A quick, easy read, but filled with common sense suggestions. A month after starting her suggestions on gait training and stretching, I've gotten more relief than in the previous two years under "professional medical care". I'm a real skeptic with non-physicians, so for me to sing the praises of the advice in this book is unheard of. I even went back and bought it just to have it for myself.

I'm a bit biased, because I'm a long time barefooter (I go barefoot everywhere), but this is an excellent entry-level book to anyone who may have a shred of suspicion that their foot pain may be caused by their shoes. Even to those that do not see their shoes as a culprit, you'll learn. ☺ This book keeps its explanations at ground level, only getting technical when necessary to make a point. You should know a little about how your body works if you want to fix it, shouldn't you? Also, there are great exercises to help rebuild muscle and flexibility in probably the most neglected and mistreated part of the human body. If you're like me, and want more detailed explanations with a more comprehensive corrective exercise program, check out Whole Body Barefoot: Transitioning Well to Minimal Footwear, also by Katy Bowman. In fact, if you want the all-over treatment, check out Katy's whole collection of books about restoring strength and flexibility in the most neglected parts of our bodies.

Is a book of good information...but if you have read her book, "Move Your DNA" you have read most of this book too.Has some good stretches & practical information.

I'm only half way through the book but have skimmed thru most of the pages and I am really enjoying the exercises shared and the writing style. I am a massage therapist by trade and like how this is written to be understood, enjoyed and implemented by anyone who can read.

I liked this book so much I decided I needed a kindle and a hard copy. Start doing these exercises and say goodbye to your foot problems. My balance in Yoga has improved so much since I started this foot health plan and removed the “casts” off my feet! As a joke my son refers to Katy as my cult leader. I call her my healer. Keep the awesome info coming Katy!

I developed plantar fasciitis and decided to check this book out. I am now pain free and completely obscessed with Katy Bowman movement information. I've incorporated nutrious movement through out my day and now the pain in my hips and shoulders are improving and I'm getting more flexible. I can not say enough about this book!

Katy Bowman is a real treasure. Biomechanist that can translate piles of info into a readable book for the layperson. EVERYONE should read this book. I have taught a foot health workshop that was inspired by Katy's work (and Jill Miller's Yoga Tune-up Balls and book, "Roll Model").

Great straightforward, easy to follow information and instructions on how to make you feet more mobile and less uncomfortable. This book lacks some of the personality that is apparent in Katys other books but a good investment nonetheless. Worth your time and money.

This book explains why good asset allocation, low fees, compounded dividends and dollar cost averaging can build a sound portfolio for retirement.

Before digging into the book itself, it is important to recognize the work of John C. Bogle in the financial services industry. As briefly highlighted in the book, Bogle started the Vanguard investment fund to test a thesis put out by a prominent researcher on the merits of "indexing". He created the fund on the idea that investors shouldn't have to pay exorbitant management fees or transaction fees when putting their money away in a fund. The work he has done cannot be matched, and the 500+ pages of this book prove it page after page.That said, I cannot give this book a 5 star rating because in my eyes, it spends far too long discussing a far too simple premise. The premise is straightforward and can be gleamed from the first few pages of reading."On average, investors would be better off to invest in an large cap index fund like the S&P 500 for the long term than any other investment strategy".If you are convinced of this line of reasoning already, this book may not be worth reading cover to cover. Bogle does state near the beginning of the book, "My goal has been to make each chapter a freestanding and indepedent essay on a particular issue". In my opinion, this book is an essential "manual" for personal investment strategy, but does not suffice for a casual weekend read. The text ruminates on the topic of mutual funds to the point where the read feels like the logical arguments are going in circles. Bogle does argue his points well though and backs them up with large amounts of historical data while also injecting his personal wisdom every so often (the true gem of the book).As a millenial who has taken the personal computer revolution for granted, it is tough to appreciate the weight of this book. U.S. mutual funds now hold over $2.5 T of U.S. equity securities compared to the $40 B in 1982, and even more startling, the concept of "indexing" is actually a novel idea still. It was hard for me to grasp the innovation of indexing because I have always found it to be an obvious idea. We have fast computers and lots of stock data, so why not index?Although my demographic (23 years of age) was probably a primary target of this text, I feel that it did not accomplish the task of compelling my thinking enough to read it straight through. Definitely worth a purchase, but I plan to peruse the chapters in random order as I need them rather than sit down and read the book cover to cover.

This is a very, very detailed book.It is like the reference Encyclopedia of Mutual Funds. The 600+ pages cover everything from basic definitions to strategies for investment to include several levels of the economics and math that go with it.On of my favorite things about this booko is that Bogle does not pull any punches. This is not a get rich quick view of funds. It is a treatise and a lifetime of experience condensed down into a readable book.While you can read the book cover to cover, I recommend using it as a reference where you read the book in the sections as you need them.

People say that investing is complex and confusing and that you need to hire a financial advisor to help you on investing your money for a comfortable retirement. After reading this book, I found that much of what you hear from the financial industry is wrong and is designed to confuse the retail investor. The truth of the matter is that investing your money is not complex and that you do not need a financial advisor. If you listen and follow the advise from much of the professional investor class about where you should put your money, you would be making them rich at the expense of your savings. John Bogle is doing us retail investor's much needed truth about how to manage your money and has the roadmap and proof to tell us, what most others in the industry has long kept silent and a secret. The truth to investing is that it is not secret, do it yourself, it is not complex, and don't listen to the advise of professional portfolio managers who are out to take your money while pretending to have your back, they don't because it is at their expense. Go with Bogle's folly, read the book, and follow the wisdom in it, and you will do better than 96% of all funds managed by the portfolio managers.

it's a good book. It's very detailed. However I don't think its a must read for a DIY investor. The basic premises on the book are covered in other investment books. I think the book is more appropriate for people with a career in investment, business and/or accounting. The most interesting part for me was the least useful, which is the story of the beginnings of Vanguard.

This was a really fun story of three best friends, Kate from Chicago, Nasreen,a Muslim-American, with roots in Pakistan and Krishna, A Hindu-American with family in India, but all living in Chicago. The story is told, back and forth in two time periods 1987-1998.The 1987 part of the story is where Kate is able to go with her two friends to India and Pakistan for eight weeks in the summer, they are still in high school at the time. It is a coming of age story, beautifully told, with vivid descriptions of what transpires during their trips to both countries. You definitely get a feel for what it is like in the countries through Kate's eyes, as she describes it from the viewpoint of someone seeing it for the first time, and loving the chaos and color around her. She has become family to her two friends families and is loved by all, they attend weddings and parties, and Kate gets to dress in the native fashion. She also develops her first real crush while on this trip.In 1998, now adults and finding careers of their own, but always still there for each other. We see how their lives develop and all of the heartbreaks, frustrations, secrets and happy occasions play out, from Marriages, loss and re-found love, it is a journey that pulls them all closer to each other. This was a really timely book as it gives you the feeling that people of different religions, ethnicity and views can all get along. Beautifully told story.I would like to thank the Author for the signed copy of this book and to goodreads Giveaways, for the chance to read an ARC.

I liked this book, I didn’t connect with it, but I liked it. The reason I couldn’t connect was the fact that I am a brown person and having grown up reading about other cultures and societies, it was a kind of different experience and took me some time to digest. And it was a good experience, don’t take me wrong, but it was too new for a reader like me for the shock to dissolve real quick.The author does a brilliant job of sketching a picture of friendships that span cultures and religions (I myself have friends from all religions and cultures and we are extremely close), the struggles of growing up, first loves and crushes, second chances and oh the wonders of traveling and seeing the world.Mehendi Tides was also a bit weird to read in ways, not the bad kind, but it gave me a perspective on how the Pakistani and Indian families living in the west live. I have cousins who live in the US, and even though I see glimpses of their life there every now and then, it’s never experienced like this or through the eyes of an American. Also, this also shows that even living in the West, the brown families, though similar on basic level, can drastically be different at other levels. A few of the events and incidents mentioned in the book weren’t how I expected brown families living in the west to be a part of or be exposed to, so it was kind of refreshing and a different view point from what I had in mind.All in all a good read, and I would definitely recommend to readers, who, like me, were taken form the time they read the theme of the book: friendship!I give this book 3.90 stars.I am extremely grateful for the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

They navigate the new developments and stages in life separately, yet together. They each have their own struggles with trying to meet the expectations of their family while trying to lead a life they want to live for themselves. These expectations they are trying to meet range from what career they will pursue in college, religious expectations, and even who they are expected to love. The girls often lean on each other and use each other for sounding boards, to vent their frustrations and to test their ideas. As much as they rely upon each other, they have their secrets as well. As they face hardships and make decisions, these secrets find their way out. The girls are put in a situation that causes them to evaluate their friendships, wondering why there were secrets between them, and having to decide if they can look past these secrets and continue their friendships.As a white American woman, who has never been outside of my own country, I felt the descriptions of the trip to India were thoroughly descriptive and made it easy to envision being there with the girls. Everything is described from what is seen, heard, smelled, and felt along the way. I also have limited experience with religions outside of Christianity, so I really enjoyed getting a look into the religious traditions and attire as described in the story. I have always enjoyed learning about other cultures, and this was no exception. It was well written and makes me want to learn more.
