This is a great book with great pictures. My son is 3.5 & loves this book. It tells the basic story of Channukah.I read in other reviews re the menorah in the beginning of the story being different than the one at the end of the story. The reason for this: the menorah in the beginning of the book has 7 candle slots, as used at temple mount in Jerusalem back in those times. This illustration is a clear depiction of what was really used. The modern day menorahs-the ones we use for celebrating Chanukkah have 9 spots for candles...this is because the miracle of oil burning for 8 days. 8 candles representing the the 8 days & the 9th (in the center) is the shemash....the candle we use to light all the other candles with.I recommend this book to help explain the story of Chanukah to little ones.

This book was the perfect book to introduce our three and almost-two year-old sons to the story behind Hanukkah. It was a very simply told story, the pictures were bright and winsome, the boys really enjoyed the metre of the poem, and it reminded me of some of my favorite books from my own childhood. It was just the right speed and length to tell an interesting story yet end before our kids lost interest. The pages move quickly and the pictures grab a little boy's attention.We have read it several times already and have had it only five days. I can see us reading this book several times every hanukkah until our sons are preteens and this book has whet their appetites for a more in depth telling of the story (if that doesn't happen before then).This book does not discuss hanukkah traditions, so if you want a discussion of menorahs, dreidels, and latkes, go to another book. This does, however, tell the story of the Maccabees and the miracle of the oil in a fun and inspiring way. Would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to teach their young children about the Maccabees :)

This little book is great for introducing kids to solid Torah principles, including armed resistance to tyranny. The Tribe could use a well rounded view of the chag, and this book definitely balances trust, obedience and righteous action in a child-friendly presentation.

My 5 yo, 4 yo and 2 yo LOVE this book. We got it in 2015 and it never went away into the holiday box with the other books. We read it all year long non stop and my kids know it word for word. Story flows great and is not annoying to read after 50 times! It's educational and my 5yo was telling her friends about king Antiochus (sp?) and educating them on what Hanukkah is all about. This year we gave it to our friends for Hanukkah!

This is a cute little rendition of the Hanukkah story. It includes the legend of the oil that lasted 8 days, which is debated nowadays, but if you're worried about that, it's easy enough to tell the kids we aren't sure if that part really happened. My favorite part, which makes me tear up every time I read it at the bottom of almost every page, is the line about only a few doing what's right. What a wonderful legacy to build in our children! It's a fun, lively, rhythmic tale that we'll enjoy for years to come.

This was a gift for young family members. The illustrations are very nice. I didn't read, but could tell they would enjoy this very much. And I was correct!! When my great nephew opened this song with Christmas gifts, he was VERY happy. Perhaps, someday, Hanukkah Will be celebrated by him :)

Such a cute book! Perfect for my 2 and 4 year. Has a great message in it that it only take a few people to stand up and do the right thing. A message that crosses over beyond Hanukkah. The art is very fun for the children. We read it three times the first night.

This book is an exciting re-hashing of the first Hanukkah. The kids love the graphic novel type illustrations that are full of action. I read this every year to my Pre-K class to introduce the holiday. My one drawback is that the book is written in poetry that is a bit above their heads. I'm still giving it 5 stars though, because the pictures are so good that I don't mind paraphrasing the poetry.

More Jack Reacher than James Bond, Jack Noble is your prototypical gruff hero with a heart of gold. Stock action fare- high octane gun fights, fist fights and car chases, replete with tag-a-long partner who is best bud/heavy muscle and a sexy femme fatale (sometimes an old acquaitance/flame, at times a new and exciting one- but they're always tough and capable, good foils for good ole Jack). So, what sets this series of novels apart from the likes of Jason Bourne, Jack Bauer, Jack Reacher or dare I say it, James Bond?Nothing, really. With the exception of the literary Jack Reacher (who stands 6'5", 250lbs of solid muscle, as opposed to the one in the film who tops out at a whopping 5'8", 150lbs- but he did play the hell out of that role so I liked the movie), Noble is the largest physically, and being ex-military, ex-Special Forces you may assume that he has all of the lethal tricks of the trade. Makes for some good reading during the action bits, dialog's a bit brief and choppy but you don't necessarily expect eloquence from these types, right?He's not as smart as Jacks Bauer or Reacher, as fast or as quick on his feet as Jason Bourne, he couldn't even sniff James Bond's shoes if we're talking suaveness and there's only one Jack Bauer and Mr. Noble is not it. But, if you like reading books with those types of flawed, but eminently capable heroes then you'll like this book, as well as the other Jack Noble novels. I've read Season 1 & 2 as well as a dual compilation pulled from the first books; they're page turners for sure. Nothing too deep or thought provoking; sometimes I like that in a book. You get engaged but it doesn't become this long emotionally driven journey, like if you were reading Game of Thrones or something. Much lighter fare, but still worth the read if its your thing.

In their break-out PBS TV show of the 1980s, "Sneak Previews", the late reviewers, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert verbalized a problem with many movies they called "Idiot Plot". "Idiot Plot" is where everyone in the audience knows was the protagonist(s) should do, but they don't do it.Starting with "Dead in Greece" I've seen more and more "Idiot Plot" despite the otherwise non-stop action and tension the Jack Noble books raise. Jack, Bear, Pierre, Clarissa and Jasmine, all of whom are supposed to be these super-spy, super-assassin types seem to constantly make blunders that they would never make in the earlier books, like forgetting that their cell phones and cars are traceable, not anticipating another "bad guy" in the closet or behind the door, and this happens repeatedly. Smart as they are supposed to be, they just don't seem to be that smart.But while Jack and Bear are certainly not very noble characters, too willing to kill out of pure rage, they certainly are interesting people.

I bought these books because everywhere I turned Jack Noble was compared to Jack Reacher, Mitch Rapp, Jack Ryan and Jason Bourne. Since I like all those characters I bought 12 books for nearly $60 convinced that I couldn't go wrong. The Jack Noble character does not come close to any of the other protagonists. It seems he is impulsive, makes poor decisions and survives by sheer luck. There is constant reference to his reputation but I haven't seen anything in the books that justifies that reputation. Nevertheless, I plowed through one book after another hoping to find that the characters and stories got better. No such luck. I never bothered to finish the last book when I realized it was more of the same. Very disappointed.

The first two books were relatively good, although Mr. Ryan needs to learn the correct past tenses of the words sneak, lie, drag, etc. (Sneaked, lay, dragged - not snuck, laid, drug).By the time I finished reading this sixth book, I decided I've had enough of Jack Noble. He's no longer a character I admire. He just seems to kill for the sake (or thrill) of killing. And there are a lot of instances where I question just how Jack was able to accomplish certain things without being discovered. I don't remember if it was in this particular book or another one (they all seem to have merged together in my mind), but there was a scene in which Jack went into an old warehouse. I received this book as a Christmas gift from my only son, Jonah, a freshman at Concordia University Irvine. It was accompanied by a card expressing gratitude for the example I had set for him. “The good, bad, and ugly, I’ve seen it all,” is how he put it. Ugly? Yes. That’s how I knew this was a legit Christmas card. He was keeping it real, so I knew he was talking about me—this was no “Hallmark” greeting card. That’s why I finished reading the book before vacation ended. This was no “gift book,” meant to fill a hollow on my book shelf. And because I also heard an mp3 of Dr. Keith talking about the book, I was further motivated. While on our anniversary getaway a few days ago, my wife finished a book she was reading, and took up this book. We read the Epilogues to each other (“Why Daughters Need Fathers” and “Why Sons Need Fathers”.) Needless to say, I got "dust in my eye" more than once. I will say to fellow dads to stay with the book; it took a while to warm up. Also, I really enjoyed the chapter entitled “Stories of and by Fathers.” Overall, I felt affirmed and encouraged by this book. And lastly, here's a thought-provoking quote from the book: “When we as a society lose the idea of the man as the head of the house, we also lose the idea of what it means to be a good husband and father.” (75)

Excellent read for any father looking for guidance in their vocation as father using God's Word. We are but a pale reflection of God's Love but a reflection none-the-less. This book helped answer some of those situational questions I struggled with from my own childhood and how I should deal with those situations as I become a father myself. Providing the perpetual cycle of freedom and forgiveness is what our Father has done for us and I want to be that to my child. Thank you Scott!

The best book I've read on the subject. Dr. Keith approaches it from a very different direction than you might expect. This is not a how-to manual. Instead of approaching it directly, you are allowed to infer from a storytelling style of writing what it means to be a good dad, and possibly reconsider redefining what it is you mean exactly when you say "good dad." I happily and strongly recommend this book , and to more than just dads. This is a book I think anyone could enjoy and would benefit from reading.

This is going to be a book that hits the "read ever year" shelf. What a wonderful encouragement and support for Dad's who aren't finding good role modes for being a dad and husband.

Keith's book could be summed up like this: The Gospel is real, so why wouldn't you try to model your fatherhood after it? Keith does a great job of easing you into the (countercultural) idea that dads are not primarily the disciplinarian of the house, but are the image of God ala Genesis 2 - meaning, that just as you see the relationship of husband and wife mirroring the relationship of Christ and the Church in Ephesians, you should see the relationship of God and the individual mirrored in the relationship of dad and kid. Probably the best thing in the whole book, with apologies to Keith who sets the whole thing up, is the end of the book where you find real world stories of dads and kids - and how powerful the Gospel has been in those relationships.

Many are comparing this series with the Jack Reacher books, or Lisbeth Salander. I see the point, but this hero doesn't really live up to that standard. Milton is too sure of himself. Saved too often by a fortuitous but improbable turn of events, rather than his cunning. One is also reminded of the Bourne Identity series, as there is an evil intelligence agency out to get our hero.The stories all tie together, so you need to keep buying to find out how it turns out. I quit after the first box set, when the price went up. Okay but not great.

This series of books were great to have and read together one after the other. I appreciated the style of writing and the fact that Mark Dawson didn't resort to sex or gory, bloody details to sell the story or as filler, making the books longer. John Smith was the story and the books were a good read.Thank you Mr. Dawson for giving me several hours of interesting, enjoyable reading.

I usually do not gush over one book, let alone three but these I could not put down. Move aside Jack Reacher, there is a new bad boy in town and his name is John Milton. I will admit that getting into the first book was a little difficult because it did not fit the formula of the detective books I have been reading but it was worth the effort. I will not spoil the plots but you have to start with one and read forward. Like the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, these have to be read in order and when you get done, you too will say, "Damn that was a good read!" i just bought Dawson's Ghosts based on my own recommendation, so myself, don't let me down.

Okay. Full disclosure here. I picked this collection up a while ago for 99 cents with a diabolical purpose in mind. I wanted to read Mark Dawson's JOHN MILTON SERIES in hopes of picking up some tips on how to sell a billion freaking e-books.Or maybe he is up to two billion by now.In any case, as any real writer will tell you, a writer needs to read and write. So I figured, all kidding aside, that I ought to read one or two of these books, just to see how he did it.For starters, it was a genre that I enjoy reading. I like me a good thriller. I'm an old school fan of Don Pendleton's Mack Bolan series, James Bond in books AND James Bond movies, the television series The Equalizer, and Lee Child's Jack Reacher series (in spite of the just way too un-tall rendition by little Tom Cruise - a fellow who is a heck of an actor and has made enough dollars over the years to buy and sell the Cadbury Caramilk secret about a half a billion times or so).So I figured I would enjoy this series well enough - and I might even pick up some diabolical writing secrets - the same I figured that sleeping on my homework on night was going to get it done by magical elves while I dreamed of endless bottles of root beer and cheeseburgers).The first book started out unluckily.The prose had a British accent.Now, there is nothing wrong with UK authors. I read a lot of them in my younger years and I actually enjoyed them. But, shortly after dropping out and/or failing to complete university at least two or three times over the years, I fell back into simpler ways and came to prefer the gritty hardboiled stylings of certain American tough guy authors. Give me Robert Parker or Stephen Hunter on their good days and I am a happy man.But a fellow has to read a lot of books to call himself a reader - so I gave John Milton a try, but when I realized it was British fiction I was a little wary.(On a side note - how many of you folks have noticed that a lot of the younger types these days believe that the word "wary" is spelled "weary". I work in an office with many official note-takers and I have come to realize that a lot of the early millennial-types really don't know how to spell anymore. That doesn't have a thing to do with this review. I'm on horse-pill pneumonia-killing antibiotics today and I am going to indulge in the occasional wandering aside.)Son of a gun, though, that first story THE CLEANER, drew me right in. John Milton is kind of like James Bond gone sour. I'm not talking Roger Moore James Bond, you understand. I'm talking more along the lines of Sean Connery or Daniel Craig - if he can ever find a decent scriptwriter to pen something more along the lines of GOLDFINGER with testosterone.I liked Mark Dawson's Milton character. I liked that he was little world-weary and suffered a bit from PTSD and was attending AA meetings like Lawrence Block's wonderful Matthew Scudder novels. I was a little less than enthralled at first with his gangster characters all having slangy limehouse accents but I kept wanting to throw them into Boston or Chicago or New York City - but that is just my literary bias coming out again. They were still solid villains and made good foils to the hero's dusty gray code of honor.I did feel that the action level could have been cranked up just a little bit.Remember, I am seriously old school and I want to see a big shoot-out showdown at the end of a novel, usually lasting for about the last one quarter's worth of a prose novel. Sure, there can a little bit of kissing but I want to see some gunplay, darn it.Still, when I hit THE END, I hastily flipped over to the next page, eager to get started reading Book Two of the John Milton Series.That would be SAINT DEATH.Cool freaking title, Mr. Dawson.It kind of put me in mind of Garth Ennis's SAINT OF KILLERS from his world-famous PREACHER series of graphic novels - and if you haven't read them yet you really don't know what you are missing!Yeah, I use one too many exclamation marks sometimes - but them antibiotics are messing with my grammatical sensibilities right now.SAINT DEATH put right into the mood to go and watch BREAKING BAD for the sixteenth thousandth time, what with its marvelous depiction of the Mexican Cartels.(Hey, speaking of Mexico, I've been watching THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN today. I'm getting a little dizzy from all of this typing so I am going back to my easy chair to watch THE RETURN OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN right now.)Okay, so I'm back.Let us deal in some more lead here, friends.I enjoyed this second book even more so. I like reading the journey of this sort of James Bond turned Quixote character. He carries a bit of that world weary gravitas that I always enjoy reading about and pretending that I sometimes possess. I liked that the protagonist was a fry cook on the side. I enjoyed the secondary character of the old cowboy bounty hunter Beau Baxter.There was a bit more shoot-em-up action in this second book and that pleased me as well. I don't necessarily need to read a bloodbath scenario, but I appreciate the reek of testosterone and gunpowder drifting through the pages of a thriller.So, when I hit Book 3 - THE DRIVER I was well and truly hooked.So for this third book Milton is making a few side bucks as a sort of a combination Uber driver meets Gypsy Cab, which worked for me. I have worked a lot of different jobs in my lifetime and I appreciate that Milton is a bit of a workhorse - just so long as he can find a below-the-radar job to pay the bills. He stumbles into a kind of gated community serial killer meets Manchurian Candidate kind of plot that Mark Dawson handled well. I also appreciated that the serial-killer meets who-dunnit Mcguffin didn't slip into the Hannibal Lector arena. The carefully woven sub-plot of political intrigue worked as well. I was glad to see bounty hunter Beau Baxter back in the saddle for this book as well. I wonder if the Cartel is going to resurface down the road.Throughout the first three novels, John Milton's first employer (basically the same folks that James Bond worked for), are frantically trying to clean up loose ends by putting John Milton under a couple of yards of English dirt. I hope that Milton gets the chance to settle up this back business once and for all - but it is definitely long arc material and won't happen too soon.The bonus novella, 1000 YARDS, started a little rockily with a lot of military-style bulletins that were, I suppose, intensely atmospheric, but mostly I flipped over them. That is a problem with having an impatient reader but it also felt a little like padding. I wanted to get on with John Milton - but he did not disappoint me when he did turn up.I'd recommend this series for any thriller fans or Daniel Craig James Bond fans or all of those Jack Reacher fans out of there who are tired of waiting for Lee Child to bang out his next big novel. Fortunately, there are over a dozen or so John Milton novels and I bet they are all just as good. I intend to get around to reading them all, one of these days.Now let me go back to healing up, would you. This box set showed up on a list of books Amazon thought I would enjoy. I tend to read adventure, crime mysteries.John Milton can no longer be an undercover operator for the British government, but he knows too much to retire peacefully. He has been on too many missions and killed too many people. These the books follow John Milton as he tries to make up for the lives he has taken. In the first book, he gets involved with a family living in a bad part of London. He soon realizes even when he tries to help people, his brand of assistance (violence) can't save the day. The government is after him so he leaves the country. I enjoyed the second book the most. When dealing with a Mexican drug cartel, he is better equipped to help. The third book takes place in San Francisco. Here, he actually makes friends, but the old ways return and he is forced to leave. I like that Dawson doesn't make the books graphically violent. People are killed, but we don't have to have every detail of the deaths.The stories are original and I look forward to reading more books by Dawson.

I dare you NOT to love John Milton. He is more deeply flawed than most humans I know. Yet he tries harder than most to make up for them. All while his former employer is gunning for him. Yes, there are some flaws in the first couple of books. Like anyone else, Mark Dawsin’s writing gets better with each book. (The Milton series is up to 13 or 14 now.). If you want some action, some drama and a truly likable hero you keep rooting for, look no further than the Milton series. This box set is 1-3.And when you are reading The Cleaner, if the gang slang is confusing, just google it! It just makes the read more authentic. I dare you to stop at 1, or 3 even. And don’t even get me started on his other series...
