In general we see that people go to the field more broken than in any other generation, but from cultures increasingly adverse to risk. We teach them to avoid risk, but then encourage them to go risk for the Gospel, and wonder why more folks can't be resilient and thrive on the field. As C.S. Lewis says in Abolition of Man, "In a sort of ghastly simplicity we remove the organ and demand the function. We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful." This is something for which my generation must consider: "some are guilty, but all are responsible" (Heschel). I am driven by the question of what I will say to Him when I see Him face-to-face for my role in my generation.

Having lived and helped others live in high-risk areas, I thought this would have been very helpful to us as we were going through difficult decisions concerning what risk to take. I highly recommend for those who live in risk, or have friends, family, or co-workers who do.

Poorly crafted and edited. Author uses word “risk” in ways that force the reader who has experienced living in dangerous cross-cultural settings to translate key statements - risk assessment is never used to identify key warning signs of an impending crisis event. No mention of the importance of understanding how soft and hard targets change risk level. Minimal discussion of defining trigger points for response actions. Concepts for developing faith to confront dangerous situations based significantly on 20th century Jewish philosopher thought. Nothing here about developing a field crisis response team and how it would function. In a crisis, the leader should focus on his relationship with God, clearly demonstrating and practicing the character of Jesus Christ and the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Crisis mode is not a call or justification to become directive in relationships with the team.A book like this needs to work effectively both now and in a Biblical setting. Does what it teaches reflect how Paul, Jeremiah, or Elisha would have responded in a dangerous situation? Yes, sometimes God calls us to experience a dreadful crisis, but what about all of the times when he gives us warning signs that we ignore, and then we needlessly suffer the consequences of our lack of planning and inattention?Look for a book that takes you through the warning signs of avoiding danger. Look for a book that tells you how to mitigate the impact of a crisis once it has begun. Long-term ministry depends on listening to God, at times retreating and regrouping, and taking advantage of the resources He gives us. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

What a challenge!

I would recommend this book to anyone in ministry outside of the United States and to the people that send them. Very encouraging and eye opening.

This is a faith and courage builder for those encountering risk and suffering for the name of Jesus.

The first section is OK, but the latter parts are dynamite for anyone having to make decisions about personal and team security in cross-cultural situations.

I have been an off and on yoga student for many years, and am a spiritual seeker, as well. I practice meditation and have studied many of the religious areas that Strom writes about. So I am not new to any of this, but he presents it in a whole new charmingly lucid way. I reacquainted myself with much I had forgotten and many ideas took on new meaning for me. I even found many of my own thoughts brought into sharp focus in words I did not have for them. This is a wonderful book. I know I will re-read it again. I heartily endorse it for the beginner who is searching as well as those already experiencing the Search.

I began my meditation and yoga practice less than a year ago. I feel fortunate to have met teachers and found a studio that already teaches and practices in ways that are compatible with Strom's teachings. What I really appreciate about this book is how so much of it made me say to myself "I knew that ". But we forget and so it is good to have books like these to remind us and to also provide us some new revelations. We all know that as we practice, as we breathe, we are unpeeling an onion of knowledge and wisdom--and we are startled to see that it was in us all the time. Each moment and each breath bring us new learning and new joys. This book also has the clear ring of lived truth, which is perhaps why I read every word (I have stacks of books that are partially read). I will be in a workshop with Max Strom next month; I am now looking forward to it with great anticipation. He provides simple steps to start healing, you can set your own pace. The important thing is to begin.

This book really helped me through a dark time. I bought it for a book club I am in, not giving it much thought but WOW. This book really helped me work through some stuff. I cried throughout a few parts of this book. It helped me get through some pain that I was holding on to. I recommend it to everyone. Give it a chance.

Yes the emphasis of this book is on yoga but there is so much more. This is an open, non religious, spiritual explanation of why the author is a proponent of yoga and breath, The health and spiritual benefits. The author draws on many cultures and religions and melds them together to bring a whole world view of man's role on a individual basis.He gives gentle lessons on how individuals can change and with realistic timelines. How it effects you and those around you.I received this book for free but I did upgrade to audio which has worked out great. It allowed me to listen to get an overview of the book and then go back and read more in depth and review specific chapters.

My go to self help book. As a 2 yr 66 yr old chair yoga student, + Tai chi, and member of a meditation group, I found this book full of insightful truths for my spiritual journey. I'm now re-reading for the second time, and have recommended it to friends. There is not a lot of yoga in it, hence some people's criticism, but its focus is on opening the heart, and awareness of the essence of your being. Nameste.

I never really found anyone who could get my attention when it comes to "Yoga" until Max. His teaching style is attentive, comprehensive and engaging. I'm never board with listening to or watching his videos either. I am really glad that I decided to take a chance on max. Now to try and find an instructor with his bed-side manner so-to-speak.

Clear, conscious and beautifully written. I would encourage those who are new to the spiritual path to read this book thoroughly, especially if you're 'doing' yoga and want to make the connection to the depth and spirituality of a practice that is embodied in every breath and movement throughout your day. And for those who have experience and a sense of grounded spiritual path, this book is a lovely reminder with great clarifying exercises.

I woke up in a contemplative mood today, after finishing my first reading of Max's book a day or so ago. I knew I'd need time for my thoughts to percolate to the surface of my mind, where I can pluck them neatly out of the eclectic brew that passes for the philosophy of my life -- so I can tell you about it. As you may know, Max founded the Sacred Movement yoga center in Los Angeles and directed it for a number of years. I practiced there regularly during those years, where Max's healing presence radiated its way into my life at a time when I needed it most. His book is that way too. Reading it is an experience that speaks to me on many levels. It reminds me of how I can use yoga as a unifying principle of my sometimes fragmented life, which seems to be in an ongoing state of needing some kind of healing -- and if that isn't a statement of the human condition, I don't know what is. But since reading the book is an experience, then my telling you about it won't do it justice. Anything I could say about it would fall short of the mark somehow. Besides, I don't want to spoil it for you. I read it slowly, savoring every page. I didn't want it to end, even though I knew it would. But see, that's the point. The things of this world don't last. The message in this book does.

Dr. Williams' character and enthusiasm for the truth of God and the movement fo the Holy Spirit shines through each of the chapters. Christians will certainly be challenged with his exposition on limited atonement, and foreordination or predestination vs. free-will debates which he attempts to show another prespective that both miss. I highly recommend this book to every believer seeking to read a theological book that not only stimulates the intellect providing truth and wisdom from God's Word but also encourages the heart in one's relationship to God, the Church and towards the world.

Dr. Williams Systematic Theology has been helpful on every level... but perhaps most of all... when that new 'float' comes along in the never ending parade of what we celebrate as the 'renewal' of the church, it is wonderful to have such a solid and trusted point of reference. Invariably Dr. Williams helps me sort out the fluff from the 'real stuff' and draws me back to his laser beam clarity of his passion for Christ and Him crucified and his respect for the Scripture. I say it's not only a must read for every one pursuing His Presence in the church but it's a must re read and read again, and keep handy for the next time you need a seasoned, intelligent, Spirit filled view of the new things the Lord is in the habit of birthing in His church.

I've searched all over the world......this is the one - hands down - for charismatic systematic theology.I run a school of ministry and this is my number one reference book.Can't recommend highly enough. Would give 10 stars if it were possible.

For many years, Charismatics have been found wanting with respect to an authoritative systematic theology written from a Charismatic perspective. We have had to "borrow" the systematic theologies of others like Grudem, Schafer, et al. And this isn't bad in and of itself. But in areas such as pneumology, the current evangelical theology has always differed with the charismatic viewpoint, and has left the charismaric wanting in this and other areas.But not any more.Williams covers each important theological subject in a thorough fashion and provides a complete systematic theology for the Charismatically-inclined as well as for the body of Christ at large.It is nice to see a sound theology advanced by an eminently capable scholar who embraces the charismatic world view.I could not give the book five stars because for all its worth, Williams does not believe that healing is in the atonement--a staple for the charismatic community. But William's viewpoint in this area may be due to his Presbyterian roots.Good book if you want a theology from a charismatic viewpoint.
